The spotlight on Trump’s anti-immigrant and “enemy” rhetoric intensifies as Election Day approaches

Former President Donald Trump is currently in the final stretch of the 2024 campaign and is focusing on rhetoric surrounding immigrants and going after his enemies. New polling from CBS News shows that the candidates are tied nationally and in battleground states. Trump emphasized immigration at a campaign rally in Arizona and promised to hire 10,000 more border patrol agents, ramping up his rhetoric on border politics and calling the U.S. an “occupied country.”

Trump suggested using the military to deal with the “enemy from within” on Election Day, pointing to Democrats and those who have opposed or investigated him. He referred to Democrats and political opponents as “sick people” and “radical left lunatics,” and mentioned Congressman Adam Schiff and Vice President Kamala Harris as threats to the country. Trump has repeatedly labeled his political opponents as “threats from within,” a tactic he has used throughout his campaign that has attracted increased attention as Election Day approaches.

In speeches, Trump has used language reminiscent of Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini to vow to root out political radicals from the country. He has referred to undocumented immigrants as “poisoning the blood of our country,” and his rhetoric on immigration has become increasingly hostile as the campaign progresses. Trump has referred to immigrants as “stone-cold killers” and the “worst criminals in the world,” promising to jail or remove them from the country.

At rallies, Trump has referred to migrants as “animals” and accused them of coming to America from the “dungeons of the Third World” to prey upon American citizens. He has also pledged to use the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to remove citizens of enemy countries from the U.S. Trump’s supporters have shown support for his rhetoric on the border issue, with many believing that the Biden administration is intentionally increasing migrant crossings to allow noncitizens to vote. Illegal crossings at the southern border have reached the lowest point of President Biden’s presidency in September.

Trump’s focus on immigration and going after his political enemies has become a central theme of his 2024 campaign. He has intensified his rhetoric on border security and immigration issues, labeling undocumented immigrants as dangerous criminals and threatening to take drastic action against them. His supporters have responded positively to this rhetoric, believing that the Biden administration is intentionally allowing increased migrant crossings to influence the election. With the candidates tied nationally and in battleground states, Trump’s strategy of targeting immigrants and enemies from within could play a significant role in determining the outcome of the election.
