The Reason Why Gen Z Prefers Staying Home Isn’t Due to Inflation

Gen Z is more likely to opt for staying at home rather than going out, a trend influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. A recent study found that American adults are spending approximately 10% more time at home than in 2003, with almost every aspect of their lives now taking place within their homes. This shift has also impacted 20-somethings who have become accustomed to relaxed nights in, often opting for backyard gatherings or dinner parties rather than crowded bars and clubs.

Bars have now become a source of social anxiety for Gen Z, who struggle with navigating social interactions and cues in such environments. The fear of misinterpreting social cues and the differing intentions of bar-goers have only added to these feelings of uncomfortability and uncertainty. This has led to a surge in interest in dinner parties, with searches for such events seeing a 148% increase on Evite, as the younger generation seeks to recreate the comfort of their at-home experiences in social settings.

Some bars are attempting to cater to this desire for at-home comfort by creating venues that feel like stepping into a friend’s living room. For example, The Carriage in Alabama offers an ambiance that resembles a cozy dinner party, with plush couches and a relaxed atmosphere. They even offer a “living room pour” of wine, which is a larger serving intended to make guests feel more at home. However, some patrons have become a little too comfortable, making it challenging for staff to maintain control over the environment.

With technology offering ways to socialize digitally and anxiety on the rise among Gen Z, experts believe that food and drink will continue to be a way to lure them out of their homes. Community-oriented events such as dinner parties are seen as promising solutions to the challenge of getting younger individuals to socialize in person. Despite the uncertainties that come with navigating post-pandemic social situations, there is recognition within the generation that spaces like dinner parties can serve as a way to connect and build relationships.
