The PSOE proposes creating a European tax on the wealthy and banks for their extraordinary profits

The PSOE, Spain’s main political party, is proposing to export Spain’s tax model to the EU and implement a tax on large fortunes and banks for their extraordinary profits, in contrast to the neoliberal policies of the traditional right and far-right parties. They believe that it is essential to increase Brussels’ resources with a more progressive tax system to fund climate change adaptation and inequality reduction. They advocate for new sources of income such as solidarity taxes on extraordinary profits, taxes on under-taxed sectors like banking, financial transaction taxes, and taxes on large fortunes and capital gains.

The PSOE emphasizes the need for a more equitable tax system to address wealth concentration and social and economic cohesion within the EU. They propose implementing a European-wide tax on large fortunes that can be expanded globally to promote a more equitable and fair society. They also advocate for minimum community-wide standards for inheritance and gift taxes to minimize tax competition. Additionally, they aim to ensure that large multinational corporations pay their fair share through minimum international corporate tax rates to prevent tax avoidance and promote more equitable distribution of tax revenues among EU countries.

In addition to addressing tax evasion and continuing with green taxation, the PSOE is focused on gender perspective integration in tax policies to close the wage gap and promote women’s economic autonomy. They also aim to combat tax havens by imposing sanctions beyond reputational costs. The PSOE’s proposed tax measures are part of a wider agenda that combines environmental sustainability with social justice, promoting progressive environmental taxes to support a more sustainable economic model and address the challenges of climate change while ensuring fair distribution of tax burdens.

The PSOE stresses the urgency of adapting to climate change by transitioning to renewable energies and a new productive model. They emphasize the need to advance the EU’s tax harmonization, address disparities in tax laws among EU countries that allow tax avoidance and wealth concentration, and incorporate a gender perspective in tax policies to promote gender equality and opportunities in the labor market. The party also advocates for mechanisms to ensure solidarity as climate impacts vary across the EU.

The PSOE’s platform also addresses the ideological battle with the right, emphasizing its commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and the progressive Agenda 2030, in contrast to the far-right’s skepticism and opposition. They propose revamping EU air quality legislation to enforce low emission zones and combat resistance to sustainable urban mobility, aiming to mobilize EU funds for green initiatives and address challenges in green and digital transitions. They also advocate for the creation of a European Investment Fund funded by EU debt to support green and digital transitions, public goods investments, and job creation.

Furthermore, the PSOE highlights the importance of EU strategic autonomy to strengthen Europe’s sovereignty, enhance market supervision in key sectors, and complete the banking union with a European deposit insurance scheme. The party also calls for reforming the management of EU external borders to protect human rights, opposing externalization efforts that undermine vulnerable populations and promote accountability and transparency in EU border agencies. Additionally, they seek to address migration and asylum challenges through a fair distribution of EU funds based on solidarity contributions and the introduction of a European mechanism for applying for asylum in embassies abroad.

In conclusion, the PSOE’s platform outlines a comprehensive agenda for tax reform, environmental sustainability, and social justice within the EU. By proposing progressive tax measures, promoting green taxation, and advocating for gender equality in tax policies, the party aims to create a more equitable and sustainable economic model. Their focus on climate change adaptation, strategic autonomy, and border management reforms reflects a commitment to addressing current challenges and promoting a more resilient and inclusive EU.
