The Progressive Union of Prosecutors (UPF) has reiterated its strong opposition to the decision of the Supreme Court to open a case against the Attorney General of the State, Álvaro García Ortiz, for the disclosure of secrets. This came after a statement was released to debunk a false rumor about the investigation of the partner of the president of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, for tax crimes. The UPF insists that García Ortiz and the chief prosecutor of Madrid, Pilar Rodríguez Fernández, acted lawfully and their actions were legitimate and necessary. They support both prosecutors in their decision not to resign, contrary to demands from other prosecutor associations and political parties.
The UPF expressed concern about the implications of the Supreme Court’s decision not only on the honor of the two prosecutors but also on the institution itself. They highlighted the current situation as an attempt to politically manipulate the Prosecutor’s Office, which weakens justice and democracy. The association urges the high court to swiftly resolve the investigation, stating that delaying the process only benefits those who seek to undermine the rule of law. The UPF emphasized the importance of concluding the proceedings promptly to prevent further damage to the State of Law.
In addition to defending García Ortiz and the chief prosecutor of Madrid, the UPF addressed various topics during their congress, including criticisms of the government, political parties, and other public powers. They called for the Judiciary, particularly the Prosecutor’s Office, to be adequately staffed and equipped, with a strategic plan to overcome the historical neglect they have faced. The association also called for the urgent renewal of a State pact against gender-based violence and reforms to empower courts to handle sexual crimes against women. They emphasized the need for comprehensive measures to address the issue effectively.
The UPF expressed concern about the rise of racist and xenophobic political discourse in Europe, particularly in Spain, targeting migrants and vulnerable individuals, such as unaccompanied minors. They denounced the deliberate exclusion and spread of false or biased information about migrants, linking them to crime or terrorism. The association demanded a State pact to eliminate such discourses from the political debate and implement solidarity-based policies for migrant integration. They emphasized the importance of addressing the migration challenge with compassion and inclusivity.
Looking beyond Spain, the UPF called on the government of Pedro Sánchez to take action on the conflicts in Gaza and Western Sahara. They urged the Spanish government to impose a total embargo on arms sales to Israel until it ceases its crimes against the Palestinian and Lebanese civilian population. Regarding Western Sahara, the association emphasized the importance of recognizing the Polisario Front as the legitimate interlocutor and criticized Spain’s support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal. They called for the suspension of commercial relations with Morocco based on the exploitation of Western Sahara’s natural resources and for Spain to assume its responsibilities as the administering power to ensure the security and self-determination process of the Saharawi people.
