The Pope’s G7 debut, ten bilateral meetings for peace: Francis to meet Biden, Zelensky among others

Pope Francis will attend his first G7 summit, where he will focus on promoting peace and discussing artificial intelligence. He has been invited by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to speak about intelligence artificial, but he will use the opportunity to build relationships that can lead to peace. The Pope is concerned about conflicts in Israel, Palestine, Ukraine, and other areas that are not making headlines, such as Myanmar.

During the summit, Pope Francis will have ten bilateral meetings with world leaders to explore diplomatic solutions and multilateralism. He will meet with heads of state and Kristalina Georgieva, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund. These meetings are crucial for the Pope, who has been advocating for finance to serve humanity, especially the poorest people in the world. Peace will be a central theme in all the meetings, including those with President Joe Biden and President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Pope’s focus on peace extends to his meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and French President Emmanuel Macron, who are both involved in the conflict in Ukraine. He will also meet with Indian President Narendra Modi to discuss economic interests and the impact of international instability on India’s growth. Modi is expected to renew his invitation for the Pope to visit India, as he did three years ago during their meeting in the Vatican.

In addition to these key meetings, Pope Francis will also have bilateral meetings with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The Pope’s message at the summit will focus on the need to regulate artificial intelligence, known as “algoretica,” to prevent the growth of poverty and inequality. He emphasizes the importance of using advanced technologies for peace, not for violent conflict resolution.

The summit discussions may also touch on the issue of abortion, a topic currently being debated at the G7. Pope Francis is expected to reiterate his stance against the “culture of rejection” in his speech. The absence of this issue in the summit’s official document may be due to the presence of the Pope, as suggested by Francesco Lollobrigida, a minister close to Giorgia Meloni. Despite the sensitive nature of the topic, the Pope’s presence at the summit will bring a message of peace and solidarity to the world leaders gathered at the G7.
