Paris kicked off the 2024 Paralympics with a grand opening ceremony following the conclusion of the Olympics. Over 4,000 athletes with various impairments will compete in 22 sports over the course of the games, with the majority of tickets already sold out. The opening ceremony, held outdoors at the iconic Place de la Concorde, featured a parade of athletes down the Champs-Elysées avenue and a symbolic declaration of the games by French President Emmanuel Macron.

The ceremony showcased a message of inclusion and unity, with performances from singers, dancers, and musicians, both with and without disabilities. International Paralympic Committee President Andrew Parsons emphasized the importance of breaking down barriers and promoting disability inclusion not just in sports but in all aspects of society. The torch was lit by former Paralympian Michaël Jérémiasz, surrounded by other torchbearers, and the Paralympic flag was raised high in the night sky, symbolizing the start of the games.

The event drew large crowds, with fans gathering hours before the ceremony to secure the best viewing spots along the route. The festivities included performances on stage and volunteers dancing alongside Paralympians as they waved their national flags. The first medals of the games will be awarded in sports such as taekwondo, table tennis, swimming, and track cycling, with athletes competing in categories based on their impairment levels to ensure fair competition. The closing ceremony is set to take place at the Stade de France, the national stadium.

The Paralympics in Paris aim to showcase the talents and achievements of individuals with disabilities on a global stage. The grand opening ceremony featured delegations from around the world, some with hundreds of athletes and others with just a handful. The crowd cheered enthusiastically for each delegation, with the French team receiving a particularly warm reception. The ceremony concluded with the lighting of the Olympic cauldron, designed to resemble a hot air balloon, and the Paralympic flag flying high above the city.

The 2024 Paralympics in Paris are expected to be a groundbreaking event that promotes inclusion and celebrates the abilities of individuals with disabilities. The games will feature a wide range of sports and competitions, with athletes from across the globe coming together to showcase their skills and determination. Organizers have worked to ensure accessibility for all participants, with accommodations made for athletes using wheelchairs and other mobility aids. The Paralympic Games offer a platform for individuals with disabilities to excel and inspire others through their achievements and performances.
