The Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba has released the names of twelve individuals who will receive the Order of Manitoba this year, the province’s highest honor. The list includes prominent figures such as The Honourable Murray Sinclair, a former member of the Canadian Senate and First Nations lawyer who chaired the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada from 2009 to 2015. Dr. Brent Roussin, Manitoba’s chief public health officer, is also among the recipients. Dr. Roussin, who became a familiar face to Manitobans during the COVID-19 pandemic, is both a physician and a specialist in public health and preventive medicine.

In addition to Sinclair and Roussin, other honorees include Elder Mae Louise Campbell, known for her 45 years of work with Indigenous women and two-spirit peoples. Myrna Driedger, a former member of the Manitoba legislative assembly and advocate for missing and exploited children, as well as founder of the Nellie McClung Foundation, is also on the list. Dr. Marcia Anderson, a nationally renowned physician, and business executive David Johnston are also set to receive the award. Ronald Paley, a musician from the bands Buddy Rich and Woody Herman, philanthropist Robert Williams, firefighter Chad Swayze, supporters of Winnipeg’s art and culture Michel D. Lagacé and James Cohen, and United Way president Connie Walker complete the list of honorees.

The formal investiture ceremony for the Order of Manitoba recipients is scheduled for July 11 at the Legislative Building. This event will recognize the contributions and achievements of the individuals who are receiving this prestigious honor. The Order of Manitoba is awarded to those who have demonstrated excellence and achievement in various fields, making significant contributions to the province and its communities. This year’s recipients come from diverse backgrounds and have made significant impacts in areas such as law, public health, advocacy, philanthropy, music, and more.

The diversity of the honorees reflects the wide range of talent and dedication present in Manitoba’s community. Each recipient has contributed in their own unique way to the betterment of the province and its residents, whether through their professional accomplishments, advocacy work, philanthropy, or artistic endeavors. The Order of Manitoba recognizes and celebrates these contributions, honoring those who have made a lasting impact on the province and its people. The investiture ceremony on July 11 will be a time to celebrate and commend the achievements of these exceptional individuals, highlighting the importance of their work and the positive influence they have had on Manitoba.
