The Olympic flame arrived in France, marking the start of a 79-day relay across the country, leading up to the start of the Olympic Games in Paris on July 26. The flame was brought to Marseille on the historic three-masted ship Belem, greeted by a crowd of over 150,000 people and more than 1,000 boats. The city of Marseille, known for its passion for sport and festivities, was chosen as the perfect location for this symbolic event.

The flame was ushered ashore by Florent Manaudou, France’s Olympic swimming champion, amidst a celebration that included a French Air Force acrobatic performance. Tight security measures were in place due to the city’s history of terrorist attacks, with over 6,000 law enforcement officers controlling access to the port area. Despite the security concerns, the atmosphere was festive and celebratory, with locals and visitors alike excited to be a part of this historic event.

The relay carrying the flame will involve over 10,000 people and will include visits to France’s overseas territories, showcasing the diversity and unity of the country. The torch bearers will include former Olympique de Marseille players as well as acclaimed chef Alexandre Mazzia, who will provide food for athletes during the Games. The relay represents values of fraternity, engagement, and French savoir-faire, aiming to unite the country in support of the Olympics.

While interest in the Games has been increasing as the event approaches, there are still concerns and dissenting opinions within France. Some feel that the Olympics will have negative effects on the local environment and exacerbate social issues related to gentrification and poverty. However, the relay aims to bring together all regions of France, building excitement and anticipation for the upcoming Games in Paris.

The choice of Marseille as the starting point for the Olympic flame relay symbolizes the pride and resilience of the city, which has faced its fair share of challenges. President Emmanuel Macron, a supporter of Olympique de Marseille, has visited the city frequently during his presidency, attempting to address social issues such as drugs and poverty. Despite these challenges, Marseille embraced the Olympic flame with open arms, showcasing the city’s vibrant culture and spirit.

As the relay continues across France and its territories, the country is gearing up for the Olympics with a sense of unity and excitement. The torchbearers, including local sports stars and artists, will carry the flame through diverse landscapes and communities, building momentum for the Games in Paris. The Olympic flame relay serves as a powerful symbol of France’s unity and diversity, highlighting the country’s passion for sport and celebration.
