The General Staff confirms that the Russian missile ship Tsiklon was hit in occupied Crimea.

missile systems to target Russian warships has been a surprising and effective tactic. Despite lacking a strong navy of their own, Ukraine has managed to disable a significant portion of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. The recent confirmation of the sinking of the Russian missile ship Tsiklon in Sevastopol, occupied Crimea, is just the latest blow to the Russian Navy. With successful attacks targeting various Russian warships, including the oldest ship still in service in the Russian Navy, Ukraine’s campaign against the Black Sea Fleet has proven to be highly effective.

The General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces confirmed the sinking of the Tsiklon on May 21, marking another significant victory for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. This latest strike follows previous successful attacks on Russian warships, including the destruction of the Russian minesweeper Kovrovets. The Tsiklon, a Karakurt-class missile ship armed with Kalibr missiles, was launched into service in July 2023, making it a valuable asset for the Russian Navy. The extent of the damage caused to the ship was not specified, but if the Tsiklon was indeed sunk, it would represent the loss of Russia’s last missile ship in the Black Sea.

In response to Ukraine’s successful attacks on the Black Sea Fleet, the Russian military has reportedly withdrawn nearly all its major ships from ports in occupied Crimea. This strategic move comes after a series of devastating Ukrainian strikes, including a missile attack on the fleet’s headquarters in Sevastopol. With 33% of the Black Sea Fleet’s warships disabled as of early February 2024, Russia has been forced to take measures to address the ongoing threat posed by Ukraine. This includes replacing the commander of the Russian Navy in March as part of efforts to mitigate the damage caused by Ukraine’s campaign against the Black Sea Fleet.

The Ukrainian military’s use of coastal missile systems to target Russian warships highlights the unconventional tactics being employed in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Despite lacking a strong naval presence, Ukraine has been able to effectively disable a significant portion of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, dealing blows to Russia’s military capabilities in the region. The systematic destruction of Russia’s naval assets by Ukraine demonstrates the evolving nature of modern warfare and the effectiveness of asymmetrical tactics in challenging larger, more traditional military forces.

Russia’s Black Sea Fleet has been a significant target for Ukrainian forces, as the fleet plays a crucial role in Russia’s military operations in the region. The loss of key warships, including the recent sinking of the Tsiklon, has weakened Russia’s naval capabilities and forced strategic adjustments in response to the ongoing threat from Ukraine. The withdrawal of major Russian ships from ports in occupied Crimea is a clear indicator of the impact that Ukraine’s campaign against the Black Sea Fleet has had on Russia’s military operations in the region.

Overall, Ukraine’s success in targeting and disabling Russian warships in the Black Sea reflects the country’s determination and resourcefulness in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Despite facing a much larger and more powerful adversary, Ukraine has demonstrated its ability to effectively challenge Russian military forces through innovative tactics and strategic maneuvers. The continued attacks on the Black Sea Fleet serve as a reminder of the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, as well as the high stakes involved in the battle for control of the region.
