Jack Hanna, the 77-year-old former director of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, has been battling Alzheimer’s disease. His family recently released a statement revealing that his condition has worsened as the degenerative brain disease has progressed. They expressed their sadness at the decline of Hanna’s health and shared that they are trying to find joy each day, despite the challenges they are facing. By sharing Hanna’s diagnosis, they hope to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease, which affects millions of Americans and their families.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, causing a progressive brain disorder that impacts memory, thinking, and behavior. The disease advances through three stages – early, middle, and late, with late-stage Alzheimer’s often referred to as severe or advanced. At this stage, individuals may lose the ability to respond to their environment, communicate, and eventually control movement. Hanna’s daughters, Kathaleen, Suzanne, and Julie, revealed their father’s diagnosis in April 2021, noting that his condition had progressed faster than anticipated, making him unable to participate in public life as he once did.

As a beloved figure known as “Jungle Jack,” Jack Hanna served as the director of the Columbus Zoo from 1978 to 1992, later becoming its spokesperson until his retirement in 2020. He appeared on various television programs as a wildlife correspondent, bringing people and animals together. Hanna was a familiar face on shows such as “Animal Adventures,” “Into the Wild,” and “Wild Countdown,” making memorable appearances on morning and late-night talk shows over the years. Despite his diagnosis, his impact on the world of wildlife education and conservation remains significant.

Hanna’s family shared with the Columbus Dispatch in June 2023 that his condition had deteriorated to the point where he struggled to remember large parts of his life or even his own family. He could only recall his wife, Suzi, his dog Brassy, and occasionally one of his daughters. Suzi, his main caretaker, emphasized the importance of preserving the pieces of him that remain, despite the challenges they face. While their daughters have encouraged professional help for Hanna’s care, Suzi insists on caring for him herself, wanting to share precious moments with him for as long as possible.

The heartbreaking update on Jack Hanna’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease highlights the devastating impact of this illness not only on the individual but also on their loved ones. It serves as a reminder of the importance of raising awareness about Alzheimer’s and providing support to those affected by it. As Hanna’s family navigates the challenges of his declining health, they continue to cherish the memories of the man he once was and the impact he had on the world of wildlife education. Despite the difficulties they face, they find solace in moments of connection and love as they care for him during this difficult time.
