The debate on amnesty in the Senate leads to a showdown between Ayuso and Aragonès due to the absence of Moreno and Rueda

The planned confrontation by the PP against the amnesty law in the Senate will be toned down due to the absence of at least four of the 11 regional PP presidents, including Andalusia and Galicia. The debate will focus on the amnesty law, currently being processed in the upper house, and will be used by the ERC candidate Pere Aragonès to highlight his opposition to the law and promote his campaign for the upcoming Catalan elections. However, several regional presidents will not attend, sending representatives instead. This contrasts with a previous session where all PP regional presidents were present to oppose the amnesty law, showing the party’s territorial strength against the PSOE.

The symbolic platform provided by the PP, which has a majority in the Senate, will give Aragonès a voice to present his arguments for amnesty and his vision for Catalonia. The PP had requested a group within the Senate to counter the amnesty law and organize a debate with all regional presidents. However, the absence of key regional presidents like Moreno Bonilla and Rueda weakens the PP’s coordinated strategy for Monday’s session. Aragonès, on the other hand, will use this opportunity to challenge the PP and promote his platform.

The PP had begun work on a report opposing the amnesty law, stating that it undermines the State’s legitimacy and threatens the survival of the Autonomic State. This report will be presented by Senator Antonio Silván at the start of the debate and is expected to be approved with PP support. The Senate committee for Constitutional and Justice matters, controlled by the PP, has set a calendar for the process, with a deadline for the plenary session on May 16th.

The strategy of the PP revolves around using the debate on the amnesty law as a focal point for their opposition and potentially capturing voters who are against the measure. The timing of the Senate debate, scheduled just before the Catalan elections, may act as a decisive factor in influencing public opinion. The regional presidents’ absence from the debate is a setback for the PP’s planned show of force, as they had previously demonstrated unity against the amnesty law.

The upcoming debate in the Senate promises to be an intense political showdown between the supporters and detractors of the amnesty law. The absence of key regional leaders like Moreno Bonilla and Rueda weakens the PP’s position, allowing the ERC candidate Aragonès to exploit this opportunity for political gain. The PP’s strategy to counter the amnesty law faces challenges with the absence of key figures, but the debate and subsequent decisions made by the Senate will have a significant impact on the future political landscape, particularly with regards to the upcoming Catalan elections.

As the Senate debate on the amnesty law approaches, the PP is gearing up to present their case against the measure, highlighting its potential threat to the Autonomic State. The contrast between the PP’s strong opposition to the amnesty law in a previous session with all regional presidents present, and the upcoming debate where key figures will be absent, reflects the evolving political dynamics surrounding this contentious issue. The outcome of the Senate debate and the subsequent decisions made will shape the future discourse on amnesty and its implications for the political landscape in Spain.
