The modern adaptation of gua sha focuses on facial treatment to give the skin a refreshed and radiant appearance.

The promises regarding face rollers and gua sha include claims of facial contouring, reduction of puffiness, smoothing fine lines, and promoting lymphatic drainage. While the temporary sculpting of the face and reduction of puffiness can be achieved through these tools, long-term contouring would require more substantial treatments. Wrinkle reduction, on the other hand, may be a bit challenging for gua sha as it can provide a temporary boost to skin elasticity but might not be as effective as other anti-aging treatments like retinoids or laser treatments.

Despite the limitations in wrinkle reduction, gua sha excels in stimulating lymphatic drainage, aiding in moving fluids towards lymph nodes and reducing puffiness on the face. Research supports the role of gua sha in boosting lymphatic circulation, providing a refreshed look with regular use. Dr. Turner mentions personal experiences where gua sha has helped patients with swollen eyelids due to blepharitis, emphasizing the importance of proper hygiene in maintaining the tools after use.

For maximum benefits from gua sha or face rollers, consistency, and proper technique are crucial. Spending at least 5-10 minutes per session is recommended to see any significant results, as sustained facial massage improves circulation and skin elasticity. While these tools can provide a soothing ritual and temporary relief from puffiness, Dr. Turner advises against relying solely on them for lasting results like smoother eyes or defined cheekbones. Hygiene practices, such as cleaning the tools after each use, are also emphasized to prevent potential skin issues in the future.
