The Ancient Roots of this Newly Trending Braiding Style

In today’s braiding world, R&B artist Tyla is the latest muse for the freestyle-braid trend. Freestyle braids are known for their intricate patterns, swirls, and spontaneous shapes, personalized cornrow styles rooted in West African symbolism. Brooklyn-based braider Rosemery Duran notes that clients often bring in nonhuman references for inspiration, such as art, gates, plants, or crop circles. The styles are time-consuming and special, and many clients have a spiritual and emotional connection to the braids, often seeking them during important life milestones.

Clients may seek freestyle braids during significant moments in their lives, such as giving birth, starting a new phase of life, or celebrating an achievement. Duran recalls one client who was going through a breakup and brought a symbol of femininity and transformation to be braided into her hair. The styles go beyond just looks, providing emotional and spiritual fulfillment to those who wear them. Many variations of freestyle braids feature an adinkra symbol as a centerpiece, conveying concepts like greatness, charisma, and freedom rooted in precolonial West African symbolism.

Freestyle braids offer a departure from traditional cornrows with sharp parts and straight-back braids by adopting spontaneous shapes braided in multiple directions. This style celebrates Black hair’s drama while protesting Black hair politics that prioritize neatness and proximity to whiteness. The style allows for boundless experimentation and personalization, showcasing the deft fingers of Black braiders. The trend first gained popularity in the early aughts, with Alicia Keys sporting braids that pushed boundaries with intricate designs and unconventional practices.

The freestyle braid trend combines elements of timelessness with a touch of experimentation, offering a way for individuals to express themselves through their hair. The style allows for creativity and individuality, demonstrating that hair can be as much of an accessory as any piece of jewelry. This trend is a celebration of Black hair and culture, highlighting the beauty and versatility of Black hairstyles. Freestyle braids are more than just a hairstyle; they are a form of self-expression and empowerment for those who wear them, making a statement that goes beyond mere aesthetics.
