Mercedes and Jonathan Sandhu, a couple from Texas, welcomed four identical girls on May 1, a rare occurrence with odds of one in 15 million. The girls, named Hannah Grace, Lucy Marie, Rebecca Claire, and Petra Anne, were delivered via cesarean section at 29 weeks gestation. The smallest, Petra, weighed 2 pounds, 7 ounces, while the largest, Hannah, was born at 2 pounds, 13 ounces. The couple, who are both engineers, already have two sons, Aaron and Luke, who are 18 months and 3 years old, respectively.
The news of the quadruplets came as a surprise to the Sandhus, as they were not actively trying for another child. However, they were excited about the idea of expanding their family. The ultrasound at seven weeks revealed the presence of four sacs, indicating that Mercedes was pregnant with identical quadruplets. DNA testing later confirmed their identical status, with the family awaiting a final placenta examination for further clarification. There have been approximately 72 documented cases of spontaneous identical quadruplets in medical history.
Despite the risks associated with carrying quadruplets, the Sandhus remained positive throughout the pregnancy. Jonathan expressed his amazement at the odds of conceiving identical quadruplets, stating that the chances of the babies making it through any challenges were much higher. The babies were born on May 1, and while they are currently in the neonatal intensive care unit at Texas Children’s Hospital, doctors are optimistic that they will be able to go home by July. The babies are on CPAP machines and feeding tubes to assist with breathing and eating.
Mercedes and Jonathan have been overwhelmed with emotions, from the initial ultrasound to the birth of their four daughters. The couple will be celebrating their five-year wedding anniversary on May 18, just a few weeks after the girls’ arrival.
