In a recent interview with ABC Radio National, Greens MP Max Chandler-Mather defended the party against accusations of spreading misinformation and inciting social disharmony by supporting pro-Palestine protests. Chandler-Mather emphasized that the Greens support peaceful protests and do not condone violent actions such as throwing bricks. He criticized the Australian media for focusing more on domestic protests rather than the ongoing conflict in Gaza, where 35,000 Palestinians have died since Israel’s invasion in response to Hamas’ attack.

Chandler-Mather pointed out that there has been more coverage of local protests than the significant loss of life in Gaza, where a historic genocide is taking place. He highlighted the lack of material action by the government in pressuring Israel to halt its operations in Gaza, contrasting it to the disproportionate media attention given to domestic protests. He argued that the government’s failure to take concrete steps to address the conflict was contributing to social unrest, rather than the Greens’ stance on the issue.

Responding to the Labor government’s accusation that the Greens were causing social disharmony, Chandler-Mather criticized the government for using “weasel words” instead of taking meaningful action to pressure Israel to end its actions in Gaza. He suggested that the government had the power to cancel two-way arms trade with Israel, but had failed to do so. Chandler-Mather emphasized the need for concrete actions to address the conflict, rather than empty rhetoric about calling for a ceasefire.

Chandler-Mather’s comments reflect the Greens’ position on the Israel-Palestine conflict, advocating for peaceful protests and criticizing the government’s lack of action to address the violence in Gaza. He noted the disproportionate media coverage given to domestic protests compared to the ongoing genocide in Gaza, highlighting the need for a shift in focus towards the humanitarian crisis in the region. Chandler-Mather’s defense of the Greens against accusations of spreading misinformation and inciting social disharmony centered on the party’s support for peaceful demonstrations and calls for concrete action to address the conflict.

Overall, Chandler-Mather’s interview on ABC Radio National provided insight into the Greens’ perspective on the Israel-Palestine conflict and their criticism of the government’s response to the crisis in Gaza. By highlighting the need for concrete action to pressure Israel to end its actions, Chandler-Mather emphasized the importance of addressing the ongoing violence and human rights abuses in the region. He also called attention to the media’s role in shaping public perception of the conflict and the need to prioritize coverage of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
