Taylor Swift’s latest release “imgonnagetyouback” prompts comparisons to Olivia Rodrigo’s song, three years after adding songwriting credit: ‘Not cool at all’

Taylor Swift is facing backlash from Olivia Rodrigo fans after releasing a song that contains similarities to Rodrigo’s 2023 track “Get Him Back!”. Both songs feature the phrase “get him back,” which is used in a double meaning to describe wanting to reconcile with an ex or seek revenge against them. Fans have taken to social media to point out the similarities and criticize Swift’s use of the concept. This situation is reminiscent of when Swift was added to the credits of Rodrigo’s song “Deja Vu” after fans noticed similarities to Swift’s track “Cruel Summer.”

Fans have accused Swift of hypocrisy for accepting royalties from Rodrigo for a line in “Deja Vu” that resembled “Cruel Summer,” while simultaneously releasing a song, “imgonnagetyouback,” with similar lyrics and concepts to Rodrigo’s “Get Him Back!” Some fans have referenced Fiona Apple’s 2005 track “Get Him Back” as evidence that the concept is not original to either Swift or Rodrigo. The controversy has sparked debate among fans on social media, with many standing up for Rodrigo and criticizing Swift for the similarities between the two songs.

The issue stems from a previous incident in 2021 when Rodrigo faced copyright issues with tracks on her album “Sour,” including “Deja Vu.” She had re-recorded a melody from Swift’s “Cruel Summer,” leading to Swift, Jack Antonoff, and St. Vincent being added to the credits. Rodrigo also had a similar situation with Paramore, where she had to give credits and royalties to the band. Rodrigo mentioned in an interview with Rolling Stone that she was not heavily involved in the songwriting issue and it was more of a team decision.

Fans have pointed out the similarities between Swift’s new track and Rodrigo’s previous song, with some questioning whether Rodrigo will receive credit for the concept of “Get Him Back!” in a similar way that Swift was credited for “Deja Vu.” The comparison between the two songs has sparked online discussion and debate among fans of both artists. Despite the controversy, both Swift and Rodrigo continue to enjoy success in the music industry, with their respective fan bases supporting them through the ups and downs of their careers.
