Amin Elsheikh, 27, managed to secure a place at the University of Warwick, where he is pursuing a Masters in Business Administration. His journey to the UK was nothing short of harrowing, as he had to flee civil war in Sudan and walk across three countries for four months to reach his destination. Amin faced numerous obstacles along the way, including rebel militia soldiers blocking routes out of the city, being arrested for possessing US dollars, and encountering gunfire on his bus. Despite these challenges, he made it to the university campus the day before his course began. Amin decided to speak out to raise awareness about the devastating war that had broken out in Sudan a year ago.
After the war broke out in Sudan in April 2023, Amin fled his home in Khartoum, the capital where the fighting was most intense. He embarked on a perilous journey that involved a 15-hour bus ride to the Ethiopian border, where he feared looters or rebel gangs would target the vehicle. Upon reaching Gondar, Ethiopia, Amin had to lie low due to anti-government unrest in the city. His escape was rushed, leaving behind his passport and necessitating travel on an expired travel document. Upon reaching Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital, he spent two months trying to retrieve his passport and arrange paperwork for the remainder of his journey to Dubai and then London. It took four months from leaving Khartoum to finally arriving at the University of Warwick, where he began his MBA course a day later.
Originally scheduled to begin his MBA in September 2024, the university agreed to expedite Amin’s course entry date when the war broke out, providing additional scholarship funds to support him. Amin expressed gratitude for the university’s support during a time of need. Despite his new life in the UK, his heart remains in Sudan, and he hopes to return one day to contribute to rebuilding his country. However, the escalating conflict and the looming threat of famine pose significant challenges for Sudan and its people. Amin emphasized that millions of individuals remain trapped in the country, facing dire circumstances due to ongoing violence and humanitarian crises.
