Survey Shows Majority of Americans Oppose Israel’s Actions in Gaza as Biden-Israel Ties Strain

The latest Gallup poll indicates that approval of Israel’s actions in Gaza has decreased among Americans for the first time since the conflict began. The poll was conducted in March and found that 55% of Americans now disapprove of Israel’s actions, with only 36% approving. This marks a significant change from November when at least half of all Americans approved of the operation. The poll also highlighted a divide between political parties, with Republicans overwhelmingly approving of Israel’s actions while Democrats mostly disapprove.

Critics of President Biden have accused him of damaging the U.S.-Israel relationship by not taking stronger actions to promote a cease-fire and assist Palestinian civilians caught in the conflict. The United Nations Security Council recently passed a resolution calling for a cease-fire during Ramadan, marking a low point in U.S.-Israel relations according to experts. Caroline Glick, an expert on American-Israeli relations, stated that the U.S. has abandoned Israel at a crucial time, effectively adopting Hamas’ positions as its own.

Despite the political division over approval of Israel’s actions in Gaza, the latest Gallup poll indicates that most Americans are actively following news of the crisis. The coverage of the conflict has varied across different channels, with some Israeli leaders criticizing their own country’s outreach efforts. Jon Alterman, from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, pointed out that the narrative in Israel differs from that in the rest of the world, with Israelis focusing on stories of their own suffering and heroism.

While Republicans continue to support Israel’s actions in Gaza, President Biden’s approval rating for his handling of the situation is only at 16%, according to a Gallup poll released last week. Democrats also saw a drop in approval, with only 47% approving of Biden’s actions in March compared to 60% in November. Biden’s overall approval rating has seen a slight increase to around 40%, but this is likely attributed to greater confidence in the economy rather than his actions regarding Israel.

The shifting opinions on Israel’s actions in Gaza reflect a broader divide within American society and political parties. The conflict has sparked debate and criticism of President Biden’s response, with some arguing that the U.S. has not done enough to promote peace and assist civilians caught in the crossfire. As the situation continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how American attitudes towards Israel and the Middle East conflict will develop in the coming months.
