Survey: Less than half of Ukrainians optimistic that war will result in restoration of 1991 borders

In a recent poll conducted by the International Republican Institute (IRI), only 45% of Ukrainians believe that the war will end with Ukraine restoring its 1991 borders, as reported by Ukrainian media outlet NV on April 4. Kyiv has promised to liberate all territories occupied by Russia, including Crimea, but previous polls have shown that a majority of Ukrainians oppose territorial concessions for peace. The 45% who believe in restoring the 1991 borders represent a plurality, with other options receiving support as well. There has been a decrease in the number of respondents who believe in restoring the 1991 borders since February 2023, with a generational divide also evident in the poll results.

President Andrzej Duda’s recent comments cast some doubt on Crimea’s liberation, prompting responses from Polish and Ukrainian officials. Duda emphasized the need for Ukraine, with Western support, to resist Russian occupation and imperialism but also mentioned the difficulty in predicting if Kyiv will be able to liberate the occupied peninsula. The uncertainty surrounding Crimea’s liberation highlights the complexity and challenges of the situation, as well as the importance of international support in Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression. Despite these challenges, the restoration of Ukraine’s 1991 borders remains a significant goal for many Ukrainians, with 39% of respondents considering it a crucial objective in the war.

The poll results reflect a diverse range of opinions among Ukrainians regarding the potential outcomes of the war with Russia. While some believe in the restoration of the 1991 borders, others envision different scenarios such as Ukraine regaining only part of its territory or Russia gaining additional territories. The generational divide in the poll results indicates varying levels of optimism among different age groups, with younger respondents less likely to believe in the restoration of the 1991 borders compared to older respondents. Despite the differences in opinion, the goal of restoring Ukraine’s territorial integrity remains a priority for many, emphasizing the importance of continued efforts to achieve this objective.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has led to widespread uncertainty and concern about the future of the country and its territorial integrity. The challenges posed by Russian occupation and aggression have necessitated a unified and determined response from Ukraine and its international allies to resist and counter these threats. The support of Western nations, including Poland, has been crucial in Ukraine’s efforts to defend its sovereignty and reclaim its occupied territories. The comments by President Duda and the responses from Polish and Ukrainian officials underscore the solidarity and shared commitment to confronting Russia’s hostile actions in the region.

As Ukraine continues to face the complexities of the conflict and the uncertainty surrounding the outcome, it is essential for Ukrainians and their allies to remain steadfast in their determination to defend the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The diverse perspectives and opinions reflected in the poll results highlight the importance of open dialogue and understanding among the Ukrainian population and the need for unity in pursuing common goals. The restoration of Ukraine’s 1991 borders represents a symbol of resilience and determination in the face of external threats and challenges, rallying support for the country’s ongoing struggle for freedom and independence. By supporting independent journalism and staying informed about the developments in Ukraine, individuals can contribute to the efforts to uphold democratic values and resist aggression and occupation.
