Surfer on Maui suffers shark attack, loses leg below knee

A 61-year-old surfer in Maui had his leg severed by a shark while surfing off Waiehu Beach Park on Friday morning. Police officers at the scene tried to control the bleeding with tourniquets before the man was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition. His right leg was completely severed just below the knee, forcing officials to close the beach park and issue a public warning to stay out of the water within a mile of the incident.

Despite being alert during treatment on shore, the man reported that he did not see the shark approaching him. Officials, including Maui fire and ocean safety officials, are patrolling the waters using rescue watercraft and a drone while state officials provided shark warning signs and helped cordon off the area. The public warning to avoid the water will remain in effect until at least noon on Saturday and may be extended in the event of another shark sighting in the area.

While no specific details were provided about the type of shark involved in the attack, this incident is reminiscent of a previous shark attack in June, which resulted in the death of well-known surfer Tamayo Perry off Oahu’s North Shore. This attack serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of shark encounters, prompting authorities to monitor and patrol the affected waters to prevent further incidents. The closure of the beach park and the public warning to avoid the water demonstrate the seriousness of the situation and the need to take precautions when entering the ocean.

The quick actions of police officers and emergency responders in controlling the man’s bleeding and providing medical treatment likely played a crucial role in his survival after the shark bite. His alertness during the incident also contributed to his ability to receive timely treatment and be transported to the hospital in critical condition. The severity of the injuries, with the leg being completely severed, highlights the dangerous nature of shark attacks and the potential consequences for victims.

The traumatizing experience of being attacked by a shark while surfing is a terrifying reminder of the risks associated with ocean activities, even in popular surfing locations such as Maui. With the recent increase in shark encounters and attacks in Hawaii’s waters, surfers and beachgoers are urged to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines to reduce the likelihood of further incidents. The closure of Waiehu Beach Park and the ongoing monitoring of the area by officials demonstrate the proactive measures being taken to ensure public safety and prevent additional shark attacks in the region.

The man’s account of not seeing the shark approach him highlights the stealth and unpredictable nature of these animals in their natural habitat. Despite the efforts of authorities to monitor and manage shark activity in Hawaii’s waters, the risk of encountering sharks remains a persistent concern for surfers and swimmers. This incident serves as a tragic reminder of the potential dangers posed by sharks and the need for continued vigilance and precautions when engaging in water activities along the Hawaiian coast.
