Sunday’s Northern Lights: The exact time UK stargazers have one last chance to spot the Aurora Borealis

People in the UK who have not yet seen the aurora borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, may have a last opportunity to witness this incredible phenomenon tonight. Due to an ongoing geomagnetic storm bombarding the Earth with coronal mass ejections, millions of people across the UK have enjoyed the majesty of the aurora borealis. Many have shared pictures online after experiencing the cosmic light show on Friday night and another peak last night. For those who have missed out so far, there may be a chance to see it tonight if the skies are clear.

According to the Lancaster University-run AuroraWatch UK, the best time to view the aurora borealis is between 8pm and 10pm tonight, as well as midnight to 6am on Monday morning. Weather presenter Liam Dutton noted that there may be more geomagnetic storms tonight, indicating another opportunity for a UK-wide display of the Northern Lights, as long as the skies remain clear. Alerts have been issued for parts of the UK, with the Shetland Islands and the area around Aberdeenshire being identified as potential locations to witness the spectacle.

The recent geomagnetic storm was rated G5, considered an extreme solar storm. This storm, caused by a large and complex sunspot cluster, resulted in stunning displays of the aurora borealis. The Royal Museums Greenwich explained that auroras can be seen near the poles in both the northern and southern hemispheres, caused by solar storms on the Sun’s surface releasing electrically charged particles that eventually reach Earth. The colorful display in the night sky is a result of these charged particles colliding with the Earth.

Although geomagnetic activity is expected to increase, with more coronal mass ejections likely to arrive, weather conditions may limit visibility tonight. Cloud cover may reduce the chances of spotting the aurora borealis. Despite this, the possibility of another UK-wide showing of the Northern Lights remains, particularly in areas like the Shetland Islands and Aberdeenshire where alerts have been issued. People are encouraged to look northwards and keep an eye on the skies for this cosmic light show.

For those looking to beat the heat at home, portable air conditioners can provide relief during warm weekends. Choosing the best portable air conditioner involves considering factors like cooling capacity, energy efficiency, noise levels, and portability. By selecting a suitable portable air conditioner, individuals can create a comfortable environment within their homes, especially during hot weather. The convenience and flexibility of these devices make them a popular choice for cooling rooms and maintaining a comfortable temperature.
