Sue Perkins Issues Apology for Misgendering House of the Dragon Actress Emma D’Arcy: ‘Regrettable Error’

British TV personality Sue Perkins apologized for using gendered pronouns to refer to nonbinary star Emma D’Arcy during an interview with Matt Smith at the London premiere of House of the Dragon season 2. While Smith corrected her by using D’Arcy’s correct pronouns, they/them, Perkins took to social media to acknowledge her mistake and express regret for not being more focused during the interview. D’Arcy, who has previously discussed their nonbinary identity, has emphasized the importance of being honest in their professional presentation and hopes to make space for younger people who want to pursue acting.

In an interview with Interview magazine in October 2022, D’Arcy shared how bringing their nonbinary identity to work was a significant step for them, especially in an industry where they had previously felt the need to conform to a cisgender identity for success. They explained that their decision to be open about their pronouns was a deliberate choice in order to create a more inclusive space for transgender and gender non-conforming individuals in the entertainment industry. D’Arcy also reflected on their nomination for best actress at the Golden Globes in 2023 and how it was a meaningful moment for the representation of transgender and nonbinary actors.

D’Arcy’s journey as a nonbinary actor and their experiences in the industry highlight the changing landscape of representation and inclusivity in the entertainment world. By being open about their nonbinary identity and embracing their authentic self, D’Arcy hopes to inspire and encourage other aspiring actors who may feel marginalized or overlooked due to their gender identity. The recognition and nominations that D’Arcy has received serve as a testament to the growing acceptance and visibility of transgender and nonbinary individuals in the media, signaling a positive shift towards more diverse and inclusive storytelling.

Despite the challenges and prejudices faced by nonbinary individuals in the entertainment industry, D’Arcy’s resilience and authenticity have paved the way for greater representation and acceptance. Their decision to be open about their pronouns and nonbinary identity has not only empowered them personally but also contributed to a more inclusive and welcoming environment for marginalized communities in show business. By sharing their journey and advocating for greater visibility, D’Arcy continues to break barriers and challenge stereotypes, ultimately leading to a more diverse and representative media landscape for future generations.
