The perpetrators of the attack on four young members of the ‘Rete degli studenti medi’ and the Sinistra Universitaria Sapienza in Rome have been identified. The incident occurred after the group had participated in a demonstration organized by the Democratic Party in Piazza Santi Apostoli. The victims, who were carrying a red flag of the ‘Rete’, were passing by a pub near Via Merulana, a meeting place for members of the far-right movement CasaPound. They were brutally assaulted by four individuals who took the flag and tried to remove their shirts bearing the logo of Spintime Labs, a cultural space occupied in the Porta Maggiore area. One of the victims managed to capture the attackers on video as they assaulted his friends, one of whom was kicked while on the ground. The Digos was able to identify the aggressors from the footage and will file a report with the Public Prosecutor’s Office about the incident. A solidarity sit-in for the victims will be held at 7 pm in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele.
The Provincial Committee of ANPI in Rome released a statement calling for the dissolution of CasaPound in response to reports that the attackers were members of the far-right organization. ANPI condemns the attack and reiterates its demand for the eviction of the public building occupied by CasaPound for years, which they describe as a fascist hideout, as well as the dissolution of the organization itself. They argue that delays in taking action would not only increase financial damage but also constitute complicity in future serious incidents. ANPI urges the enforcement of the laws of the Republic and the dissolution of fascist organizations to ensure the safety of all individuals.
The Secretary of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, announced that a protest rally will be held at Piazza Vittorio to denounce the assaults on the students who were returning from a demonstration against the Premierato and Autonomy. Schlein criticized Minister Piantedosi for failing to take action to dissolve fascist movements and address the escalating violence. She emphasized the urgency of the situation, highlighting the increasingly frequent acts of violence and the need for immediate intervention to prevent further incidents. The Democratic Party reaffirmed its commitment to standing in solidarity with the victims and advocating for the protection of democratic principles against fascist threats.
