Stellantis strike vote plans announced by UAW President Fain

United Auto Workers union President Shawn Fain announced plans to hold strike authorization votes against Stellantis as the automaker is not meeting the guarantees made in the 2023 labor deal after a six-week strike. Fain mentioned during a speech that the union is ready to hold these votes and have workers go on strike if Stellantis does not meet their demands.

The strike authorization votes would be held at one or more locals representing Stellantis workers, as mentioned by Fain during a livestreamed speech. He emphasized the importance of enforcing the contract and saving American jobs, stating that they would stand united to do so. This move by the union is in response to Stellantis not fulfilling its promises from the labor deal.

Traditionally, strike votes are common when contracts are nearing the end and negotiations for a new deal are starting. However, the 2023 agreements between the union and automakers like Stellantis, General Motors, and Ford now allow for strikes during the contract if there are plant closings or violations of job protections. If this strike occurs, it would be unprecedented in this context.

With 43,000 UAW members at 19 manufacturing facilities nationwide, Stellantis could be significantly impacted by a strike. While only some locals may be holding strike authorization votes, the potential for a limited strike to affect operations at other Stellantis facilities remains. The company has not responded immediately to Fain’s statements, and it is unclear how they will proceed.

Stellantis mentioned not having violated any commitments made in the 2023 UAW collective bargaining agreement, in response to an unfair labor practice charge filed by the union. The company emphasized its focus on managing new vehicle launches to enhance competitiveness and ensure future sustainability and growth. Fain, however, criticized Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, stating that he is the problem.

This situation is evolving, and updates are expected. Fain and the UAW are continuing to advocate for their members’ rights and demanding that Stellantis fulfill its promises from the labor deal. The potential for a strike looms over the negotiations, and the outcome will have significant implications for the automotive industry and American workers.
