Statement from Istanbul Governor Gül regarding anti-Israel protests

The Governor of Istanbul, Davut Gül, has made a statement on his social media account regarding the recent protests in support of Palestine and against Israel. According to Gül, there have been 947 events organized in the past 6 months in Istanbul for this purpose. He stated that all reasonable requests, including those for the Galata Bridge, which has never been designated for such events in the past, have been accommodated. Gül emphasized that as in all social events, places that do not affect public safety are allowed for protests related to Palestine. He also warned about the activities of marginal groups formed by different malicious actors who use well-meaning citizens to undermine the sacrifices of the state and the nation.

Gül’s statement also pointed out that these groups are working as “fifth columns” with the support of external forces, and they ignore the efforts and sacrifices of the Turkish state and people. He accused them of conducting activities that go against the goodwill of the nation by supporting Israel, which he labeled as a “killer.” Gül urged those who are looking for murderers to direct their attention towards Israel and the same external powers that support it. This accusation highlights the Governor’s concern about the influence of external forces on the internal affairs of the country and the manipulation of certain groups for their agenda.

The Governor’s response comes amidst a wave of protests and demonstrations in Istanbul and other parts of Turkey in solidarity with the Palestinian cause. The conflict between Israel and Palestine has ignited strong emotions and mobilized many people to take to the streets to express their support for the Palestinian people and their opposition to Israeli policies. The Governor’s statement reflects the Turkish government’s stance on the issue, which aligns with popular sentiment in the country and emphasizes support for Palestine against what it perceives as Israeli aggression.

The reference to “fifth column” activities and external forces indicates a suspicion of foreign interference in domestic affairs and an attempt to manipulate public opinion for ulterior motives. Turkey has a long history of standing up for the rights of oppressed peoples, and the government’s position on the Israel-Palestine conflict is in line with this tradition. By accusing certain groups of collaborating with external powers and undermining the nation’s interests, the Governor is sending a strong message about the need to protect Turkey’s sovereignty and independence in the face of global geopolitical challenges.

Overall, the Governor’s statement sheds light on the complex dynamics at play in the ongoing protests in Istanbul and Turkey in support of Palestine. As the conflict in the Middle East continues to escalate, the Turkish government’s response reflects its commitment to standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people and opposing what it sees as Israeli aggression. By addressing concerns about external influences and manipulation of societal groups, the Governor’s statement underscores the importance of safeguarding national interests and sovereignty in the face of domestic and international challenges. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how these protests and demonstrations will impact Turkey’s foreign policy and relations with other countries involved in the Israel-Palestine conflict.
