SPD: Vice-Chair Serpil Midyatli expects “Chancellor Effect” in the federal election

Serpil Midyatli, the deputy SPD federal chairwoman, is optimistic about the upcoming federal election. She believes that Chancellor Olaf Scholz is a strong leader who has quietly dealt with problems and expects a “Chancellor effect” to impact the election. Despite the current low poll numbers for her party, Midyatli remains positive about the election next year, citing the party’s previous ability to rally before the 2021 election. She is confident in the stability of the coalition government and believes it will persevere despite challenges.

Midyatli emphasized the need for reforming the debt brake in light of challenges and the Federal Constitutional Court’s ruling. She also mentioned the possibility of increasing revenue through a wealth tax. While acknowledging the difficulties in the coalition, she expressed frustration with certain decisions, such as the Finance Minister’s opposition to debt brake reform, which she deemed ideological. She expects tough negotiations during the budget process and highlighted the successes of the government, such as acceleration laws, deregulation, and the skilled worker immigration law.

The SPD politician warned against lowering social standards, stating that it would be detrimental. She cautioned against reacting to economic downturns with cuts to social services, as proposed by the FDP. The FDP, which governs with the SPD and Greens at the federal level, has called for stricter sanctions against welfare recipients for missing appointments. Midyatli argued that such measures would only increase uncertainty and not solve the underlying issues. She stressed the importance of maintaining social standards and avoiding policies that harm the population.

Looking ahead to the federal election, Midyatli stressed the importance of having a calm and competent leader in Chancellor Scholz, especially in the face of global challenges. She believes that many people appreciate having a thoughtful leader during turbulent times. Despite the complexities within the coalition, Midyatli remains confident in its ability to endure. She acknowledged the challenges faced by the government but also highlighted the progress made in various areas. The SPD deputy chairwoman expects tough negotiations ahead regarding the budget and continues to advocate for strong social standards and responsible economic policies.
