Son’s release comes after a year-long detention in China over bribery allegations. The South Korean soccer player, who was detained at Shanghai airport in May, was suspected of taking bribes. While details of his return to South Korea are still unclear, sources have reported that he returned on Monday afternoon. The allegations against Son were related to suspected match-fixing involving his club’s coach, Hao Wei.

Throughout Son’s detainment, the South Korean Foreign Ministry had been working closely with Chinese authorities to ensure a fair and swift process for the soccer player. They also provided assistance to Son during this time, conducting about 20 consular interviews and ensuring he had access to lawyers. Son, who has played for South Korea’s national team 18 times, had joined Shandong Taishan in 2021 after playing for Pohang Steelers and Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in South Korea.

Chinese soccer has been marred by corruption allegations for years, with efforts being made to clean up the sport’s reputation. Son’s case is just one example of the challenges faced by the sport in China. The South Korean Foreign Ministry’s statement did not confirm whether the bribery allegations against Son were proven, leaving some uncertainty around the outcome of the investigation. Despite this, Son’s return to South Korea marks the end of a difficult period for the soccer player and his loved ones.

The news of Son’s release and return to South Korea has brought relief to his fans and the soccer community. Many had been following his case closely, hoping for a positive resolution. Son’s career in professional soccer, both in South Korea and China, has been impacted by this incident, but his return home signals a new chapter for him. As more details emerge about the circumstances surrounding his detention and release, the soccer world will be watching closely to see how this experience shapes Son’s future in the sport.

The South Korean government’s efforts to assist Son during his detainment highlight the importance of diplomacy and consular support in such situations. The collaboration between South Korean and Chinese authorities in this case reflects a commitment to ensuring fairness and justice for individuals caught up in legal issues abroad. As Son readjusts to life back in South Korea, he will likely receive continued support from his fans, teammates, and the broader soccer community as he seeks to move forward from this challenging experience. The impact of his detention and the allegations against him will undoubtedly shape his future in the sport and beyond.
