Sony Music Group and its affiliates, Sony Music Publishing and Sony Music Entertainment, have announced that third-party companies are not allowed to use the work of their recording artists to train AI systems without permission. This decision is aimed at protecting the rights of songwriters and recording artists, including copyrights, as AI technology continues to impact the creative industries. The company will not permit the use of songs, lyrics, cover art, photos, or audiovisual recordings without explicit authorization.

Some of the popular artists signed to Sony Music Group include Celine Dion, Doja Cat, Lil Nas X, and 21 Savage, while the Sony Music Publishing roster includes legendary acts such as AC/DC, The Beatles, BTS, Bob Dylan, and the late Amy Winehouse. The use of AI in music has been a controversial topic, with recent instances such as pop star Drake facing backlash for using AI to generate unauthorized voice likenesses of late artists like Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg in a song aimed at Kendrick Lamar. After receiving a cease and desist letter, Drake removed the song from online platforms.

The topic of responsible AI was highlighted at Google’s annual Google I/O keynote presentation this week, emphasizing the importance of companies protecting their data from misuse by data miners and web scrapers. As AI technology continues to develop and impact various industries, it is crucial for companies to establish clear guidelines and safeguards to prevent unauthorized use of their data. Sony Music Group’s decision to restrict third-party companies from using their artists’ work for AI training purposes aligns with this goal of safeguarding the rights of creators.

AI has been making waves in the music industry, with advancements leading to new creative possibilities but also raising ethical concerns regarding ownership and copyright. Sony Music Group’s stance on protecting the work of its artists from unauthorized use for AI training reflects a broader shift towards establishing responsible practices in the development and deployment of AI technologies. By setting clear boundaries and guidelines for the use of their content, Sony Music Group aims to ensure that the rights of songwriters and recording artists are respected in the evolving landscape of technology and creativity.

In conclusion, Sony Music Group’s decision to prohibit third-party companies from using their recording artists’ work for AI training without permission signifies a commitment to upholding the rights of creators in the face of technological advancements. As AI continues to influence the music industry and creative processes, it is essential for companies to establish ethical guidelines and protections to prevent misuse of their content. By taking a proactive stance on responsible AI practices, Sony Music Group sets a precedent for other companies to prioritize the protection of artists’ rights in the ever-changing landscape of technology and innovation.
