Chrysler, a subsidiary of Stellantis, has announced a recall of over 211,000 SUVs and pickup trucks in the U.S. due to a software malfunction that could disable the electronic stability control systems in the vehicles. The recall affects certain model year 2022 Dodge Durango, Ram 2500, and Ram 3500 vehicles. According to documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the malfunction in the anti-lock braking control module could lead to the failure of the stability control system, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will update the software for free to remedy the issue, with notification letters set to be mailed out on July 26.
A routine review of customer feedback led to the discovery of the software problem impacting these specific vehicles. Chrysler noted that there have been no reports of related injuries or accidents so far but urged customers to follow the instructions on their recall notices once they receive them. Chrysler expects that a total of 211,581 vehicles produced in select periods between April 2021 and December 2022 have this defect in the U.S. This includes 524 Ram 3500s, 157,890 Ram 2500s, and 53,167 Dodge Durangos. Some similar vehicles that were produced before or after the suspected periods may not be included in this recall, as they may have different anti-lock braking control module software. In addition to the vehicles recalled in the U.S., an estimated 17,462 vehicles will be subject to recall in Canada, along with 2,313 in Mexico and another 5,023 in certain markets outside North America. Stellantis’ spokesperson provided this information, indicating that the recall will extend beyond U.S. borders to ensure the safety of consumers in other countries as well. The company is taking proactive measures to address the software malfunction in these vehicles and prevent any potential safety risks associated with the electronic stability control systems.
