Socialites recently gathered at the Frederick Law Olmsted Awards Luncheon, popularly known as “the hat lunch,” where they managed to raise an impressive $4.6 million. The event is famous for its attendees showing off their elaborate and extravagant hats, with this year’s creations adorned with flowers, feathers, bows, and beads.
Among the notable guests were Randi Zuckerberg, the sister of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, and Stila Cosmetics CEO Michelle Kluz. They sported hats in honor of Flaco, a beloved owl from the Central Park Zoo who passed away. Their hats featured flowers, twigs, and faux owls, paying tribute to Flaco’s time spent in New York City.
The inspiration for their hats came from Flaco’s escape from the zoo due to vandalism, which led him to roam freely around Central Park and the Upper West Side. Despite his unfortunate demise when he flew into a building, Flaco had brought joy to many city residents during his time in the wild.
Various other socialites attended the luncheon, including Gillian Miniter, Serena Miniter, Elyse Newhouse, Muffie Potter Aston, and designer Lela Rose, among others. Notable figures like former Mayor Michael Bloomberg also made an appearance, emphasizing the unique charm and history of Central Park.
Bloomberg highlighted the significance of the event taking place in Central Park, stating that it could not be replicated elsewhere due to the park’s rich history and diverse population. When asked about his favorite hat from the event, he humorously declined to answer, avoiding getting “trapped” into choosing a specific design.
One particularly unique fascinator spotted at the event was shaped like a wok filled with noodles, worn by attendee Elizabeth R. Varet. She explained that the whimsical hat was meant to convey not taking herself too seriously, with her husband jokingly suggesting ways to dissuade her from wearing it again. The luncheon was not only a showcase of elaborate hats but also a successful fundraising event for a worthy cause.
