Skylar Markley and Seth Mullen, both individuals with developmental disabilities, were recently honored with Individual Spotlight Awards at the annual Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month Luncheon in Coshocton County. These awards recognize individuals who have overcome challenges to achieve their goals and make a positive impact on their community. Markley, who previously worked as a security guard but had to quit due to health issues, is now looking for new employment opportunities. Mullen, on the other hand, has worked at Peach Tree Poultry for nine years and has displayed a strong work ethic and dedication to his job.

Other awards presented at the luncheon included the Employer Award to Coshocton Regional Medical Center for its inclusive work environment and support for employees with developmental disabilities. Senior Maliya Williams from River View High School received the Local Hero Award for organizing a homecoming dance for individuals with developmental disabilities as part of her senior project. Additionally, Registered Nurse Karen Casey and RHDD were recognized with Dedication Awards for their commitment to providing quality care and support services to individuals with disabilities.

Ridgewood Local Schools was honored with the Community Partner Award for their support of the Board of Developmental Disabilities. The school district has allowed the Special Olympics softball team to use their facilities for practice, accommodated student Cody Croy to participate in the seated shot-put event, and provided other opportunities for individuals with disabilities to engage in school activities. Croy, in particular, has excelled in the seated shot-put track event and hopes to compete at the state level again this year.

The luncheon featured presentations, a panel of speakers discussing life with developmental disabilities, and readings of essays from local school contest winners. Approximately 180 people attended the event, which highlighted the achievements and contributions of individuals with developmental disabilities in the community. Superintendent Steve Oster commended the award recipients for their determination, advocacy, and dedication to making a difference in their own lives and the lives of others.

Overall, the annual luncheon by the Coshocton County Board of Developmental Disabilities celebrated the resilience and accomplishments of individuals with developmental disabilities, as well as the support of employers, educators, healthcare providers, and community partners. These awards and recognitions serve to raise awareness about the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and to promote inclusion and opportunities for them to thrive and contribute to society. The event highlighted the importance of fostering a supportive and inclusive community that values the unique abilities and contributions of all its members.
