Singapore Airlines has offered compensation to passengers who were injured during a flight that experienced severe turbulence, resulting in dozens of injuries and one death. Passengers with minor injuries have been offered $10,000 each in compensation, while those with more serious injuries have been invited to discuss a compensation offer. Passengers with serious injuries requiring long-term care have been offered an advance payment of $25,000 to address their immediate needs, which will be part of their final compensation.
All passengers on the affected flight from London to Singapore will receive a refund for the cost of their tickets. The Boeing 777-300ER encountered turbulence while flying over Myanmar’s Irrawaddy Basin, leading to the death of a 73-year-old British passenger due to a suspected heart condition. The aircraft was diverted to Bangkok following the incident, and several passengers required hospitalization.
Some passengers remained in a Thai hospital more than two weeks after the incident, with reports indicating that one passenger, Kerry Jordan, was left paralyzed from the chest down. Data from aviation tracking site FlightRadar24 showed that the flight experienced sudden dips and climbs, lasting about 90 seconds. Turbulence is caused by clashing bodies of air moving at different speeds, and the flight likely encountered rapidly developing thunderstorms over southern Myanmar that led to the extreme turbulence.
Passengers who suffered serious injuries and required long-term care are eligible for additional compensation, with an advance payment of $25,000 to address immediate needs. The airline is working with affected passengers to provide necessary support and compensation for their injuries. The incident has raised concerns about safety during flights and the impact of severe turbulence on passengers, highlighting the importance of proper safety protocols and passenger care during emergencies. Singapore Airlines has taken responsibility for the incident and is working to address the needs of affected passengers.
Injuries sustained by passengers on the flight ranged from minor to serious, with some requiring long-term care and financial assistance. The compensation offered by Singapore Airlines reflects the severity of the injuries and the airline’s commitment to addressing the needs of affected passengers. The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of turbulence during flights and the importance of proper safety measures to mitigate its impact. As investigations into the incident continue, the airline is focused on providing support and compensation to passengers while ensuring the safety of future flights.
