Signs that Indicate Your Good Dog has Turned Bad

In recent weeks, Gov. Kristi Noem of South Dakota has faced harsh criticism for her decision to shoot and kill her family dog, Cricket. Noem claims that the dog was aggressive and dangerous. She even suggested that President Biden should have euthanized his own dog, Commander. While some experts agree that there are situations where euthanasia is necessary, they emphasize that it should be a last resort and other non-lethal approaches should be exhausted first.

One expert, Erica Feuerbacher, a specialist in dog behavior and learning, stressed that there are many interventions that can be tried before resorting to euthanasia. Dogs are descended from wolves and can display some level of aggression as a natural instinct. Dr. Clive Wynne, a canine-behavior expert, noted that predatory instincts might explain Cricket’s behavior towards chickens, but that does not necessarily mean she posed a threat to humans. In many cases, dogs may act aggressively due to stress or fear, prompting a need for professional evaluation from a veterinarian.

Vivian Zottola, a behavior specialist, highlighted the importance of understanding why a dog might be displaying aggressive behavior and addressing those underlying causes. Dogs who show signs of aggression can benefit from working with behaviorists or trainers to identify triggers and manage stress. Owners should make informed decisions to keep their pets safe and prevent unwanted behaviors. In extreme cases where aggression poses a constant danger, euthanasia might be considered, but only after all other options have been exhausted.

Some dogs may benefit from medication, such as anti-anxiety drugs, to help manage their behavior. Dr. Feuerbacher emphasized that each case must be carefully evaluated to determine the appropriate course of action. In the case of Gov. Kristi Noem and her dog Cricket, experts suggest that there were alternative solutions worth exploring before resorting to euthanasia. Dr. Wynne praised the public’s response to the situation, noting that many people from different political backgrounds were dismayed by Cricket’s fate. The importance of considering the well-being of the dog and exploring all possible interventions was highlighted by experts in the field.

Overall, the controversy surrounding Gov. Noem’s decision to euthanize her dog has sparked discussions about responsible pet ownership, understanding canine behavior, and seeking appropriate interventions for aggressive dogs. While euthanasia can be a necessary option in extreme cases, experts emphasize the importance of exhausting all non-lethal approaches first. By being attentive to triggers, seeking professional help, and making informed decisions, owners can help their dogs live happy and well-adjusted lives while ensuring the safety of those around them.
