Shuswap begins rebuilding after destructive Bush Creek East fire

After the devastation caused by the Bush Creek East wildfire, the rebuilding process in the North Shuswap has begun. The Columbia Shuswap Regional District has issued building permits for 12 projects, with 10 more in progress, including eight for single-family homes. Out of the 233 properties affected by the wildfire, around 109 will likely require a development permit before a building permit can be issued. The regional district is working through the necessary processes with property owners as quickly as possible and is dedicated to assisting affected residents in the rebuilding process.

In addition to the building permits, the regional district has issued 11 development permits and has 11 more currently in progress. Specific staff and resources are dedicated to working with affected property owners to manage the expected increase in land-use and building permits this season. Property owners are encouraged to contact the CSRD Development Services department directly for assistance. The Insurance Bureau of Canada estimated the insured damage to be around $240 million, with over 270 structures confirmed to have been destroyed, along with extensive damage to public infrastructure such as hydro poles resulting in power outages for thousands of customers.
