Shocking Survey Finds Gen Z Employees Miss One Work Day a Week Due to Mental Health Struggles

Gen Z employees in the UK are experiencing significant mental health struggles, leading to the equivalent of missing one work day per week in terms of productivity. This was the finding of a study conducted by the health and life insurance company Vitality. These young workers reported losing an average of 54 productive days per year due to their mental health issues, despite showing up for work regularly.

The impact of mental health struggles on productivity is significant not only for individual workers but also for the economy as a whole. Vitality reported that nonproductive or missed work days have cost the UK economy over $178 billion. In the US, dissatisfied and detached workers are estimated to have cost the world $8.8 trillion in economic losses. Young workers are particularly affected by mental health struggles, with the analysis showing that they are 224% more likely to be depressed compared to their older colleagues.

Even though mental health struggles are prevalent among Gen Z employees, only a quarter of those surveyed said they took advantage of their companies’ wellness resources. Vitality CEO Neville Koopowitz highlighted the potential for significant gains in both business and the wider economy if health at work is properly managed. This suggests that more needs to be done to encourage employees to seek help and utilize available resources to address their mental health issues.

In the US, Gen Z employees have been found to be more likely to take mental health days and sick days compared to past generations. This is perhaps due to the younger generation being more in tune with their mental health needs and willing to prioritize them, even if it means taking time off work. Work expert Lucy Kemp noted that Gen Z is facing more stressors than any previous generation, which may explain their increased likelihood of missing work due to mental health issues.

Overall, the study by Vitality sheds light on the significant impact of mental health struggles on productivity in the workplace, particularly among Gen Z employees. It underscores the importance of addressing mental health issues in the workplace and encouraging employees to seek help when needed. By implementing effective strategies to support mental health and well-being among workers, businesses and the economy as a whole stand to benefit greatly. It is essential for employers to prioritize mental health in the workplace and provide adequate resources and support for their employees.
