Shocker! The Surprising Germ Hotspot in Your Bathroom May Just Be This Innocent Item

In a recent episode of HuffPost’s “Am I Doing It Wrong?” podcast, microbiologist Jason Tetro, also known as “The Germ Guy,” revealed that the bath mat is actually the germiest part of the bathroom, even more so than the toilet. This is because bath mats have a high surface area for microbes to grow, especially since they are designed to absorb water. Fecal matter can be launched up to six feet from a toilet when it is flushed, creating a plume of droplets that can land on the bath mat. This can lead to potential infections and other health issues.

To keep bath mats less microbial, Tetro suggests closing the lid of the toilet before flushing, towel off while still in the tub to reduce water absorption by the mat, and hang the mat up to dry thoroughly after use. Experts recommend washing bath mats at least once a week and following the laundering instructions on the label. Additionally, wooden or stone mats are less likely to foster microbes as they do not absorb moisture as easily as cloth mats with rubber or plastic backing.

Another overlooked germ hotspot in the bathroom is the shower curtain. Tetro advises incorporating shower curtain maintenance into regular cleaning routines by using a disinfectant, such as bleach, to reduce potential microbial growth on the curtain. Biofilms, caused by bacteria in the water, can form on shower curtains, toilet bowls, tubs, and shower heads. It is essential to remove these biofilms to prevent the buildup of harmful microbes which could make us sick.

While the majority of microbes encountered in the bathroom are not harmful, it is crucial to regularly clean and disinfect to eliminate any potentially harmful ones. Tetro emphasizes the importance of having a good relationship with microbes and understanding that not all of them are harmful. By cleaning and disinfecting regularly, we can reduce the chances of encountering harmful microbes and prevent infections and other health issues.

In addition to bathroom hygiene, the “Am I Doing It Wrong?” podcast covers a wide range of topics, including tips for tipping, online dating, handling credit card debt, maintaining oral hygiene, and much more. Listeners can expect expert advice on various aspects of daily life and practical tips for improving their routines.
