Shifting Focus: Netflix’s New Film Strategy Prioritizes Audience over Auteurs

Dan Lin debuts as Netflix’s new film chief and has made significant changes, including reorganizing the film department by genre rather than budget level and a focus on producing a wider range of films to cater to Netflix’s 260 million subscribers. The company is no longer offering expensive action movies featuring big stars, and upfront deals are being replaced with more flexible formulas for talent compensation. Netflix is adopting a more austere approach, as demonstrated by a recent round of layoffs in the creative executive group.

With Netflix now dominant in the streaming world, top dollar is no longer required to attract acclaimed filmmakers, and big studios are allowing their films to appear on the platform soon after theatrical releases. Movies produced externally are increasingly popular with Netflix’s subscribers, indicating a change in content strategy for the platform. The previous film chief, Scott Stuber, lavishly funded talent-driven projects to appeal to award-winning directors, resulting in a peak production period in 2021 with a new movie released weekly.

Dan Lin aims to enhance the quality of Netflix’s films while reducing costs and production frequency. He advocates for aggressively producing material in-house to have more control over film quality and performance. The pay structure is under review, with discussions about compensation tied to a film’s performance metrics. Some filmmakers and agents find Netflix less appealing due to budgetary constraints and the company’s reluctance to release films in theaters, leading to high-profile collaborations moving on to other platforms.

Netflix’s theatrical release strategy remains unchanged, which has sparked debate among filmmakers, stars, and theater owners who argue that streaming-only releases lack the awareness and cultural impact of theatrical premieres. The creative community hopes that Mr. Lin’s renewed focus on Netflix’s film content may lead to the greenlighting of projects that traditional studios would reject, offering opportunities for romantic comedies and midbudget character studies in an evolving Hollywood landscape. As competition in the streaming sector intensifies, the response to Mr. Lin’s leadership changes and Netflix’s evolving film strategy will determine the platform’s role in shaping the future of film production and distribution.
