Sheridan Smith, 42, wowed guests in a semi-sheer black mini dress at the Opening Night of her West End performance on Tuesday. The actress flaunted her toned torso and legs in the cut-out ensemble and celebrated with friends and co-stars at The Ham Yard Hotel. Happy Valley actor James Norton and writer Rufus Wainwright were among the celebrities who attended the press night performance to support Sheridan in her role as functioning alcoholic actress Myrtle Gordon in the new musical based on the 1977 film.

Sheridan has been praised for her performance, with critics applauding her portrayal of Myrtle Gordon. The actress, who dyed her blonde locks brown for the role, is on a 21-week run at the Gielgud Theatre, where the performance is filmed live every night outside the theatre for all to see. She described the role as a gift that allows her to take control of her own demons and erase past traumas that threatened her career. Sheridan’s enthusiasm for the role shines through as she speaks about her return to theatre after receiving rave reviews for her recent roles.

Sheridan’s performance in Opening Night has won over the majority of critics, with many praising her charisma and charm on stage. The production, which incorporates songs and a more lively portrayal of Myrtle Gordon by Sheridan, has been described as eccentric and original. However, some critics have found faults with the play, referring to it as pretentious, convoluted, and self-important. Despite these criticisms, Sheridan’s performance has been consistently praised for its energy and authenticity.

The actress’s dedication to her role as Myrtle Gordon is evident in her physical performance, including improvisational moments that keep the show fresh and exciting for both the audience and herself. Her dressing room, filled with pictures of her son Billy, serves as a space for her to recuperate after demanding scenes that require physical exertion. Sheridan enjoys the unpredictability of live performances and embraces the challenge of keeping each night unique and engaging for the audience.

Sheridan’s performance in Opening Night marks a triumphant return to the West End, with her portrayal of Myrtle Gordon captivating audiences and earning critical acclaim. Despite past struggles and setbacks, Sheridan’s talent and commitment to her craft are on full display in this role. As she continues her run at the Gielgud Theatre, audiences can expect to see a powerhouse performance from Sheridan that showcases her versatility and dedication to her craft. Her success in Opening Night is a testament to her resilience and passion for performing.
