Sheridan Smith, 42, was seen in high spirits as she left the Gielgud Theatre after her musical Opening Night was cancelled two months early. She was spotted leaping into the arms of her security guard, showing off a smart casual look in all black attire. The play was cut short due to financial challenges, with 2:22 A Ghost Story set to replace it, starring Stacey Dooley in her West End debut as Jenny. The show, based on a 1970s film, had received criticism from both critics and audience members, despite Smith’s star power.

Stacey Dooley expressed her excitement about her new role in 2:22 A Ghost Story, following in the footsteps of Laura Whitmore and Cheryl. The play, which revolves around four familiar characters in a subtle ghost story, has received positive reviews in the past, with Lily Allen earning a Best Actress nomination at the Olivier Awards for her performance as Jenny. Meanwhile, Sheridan Smith had been portraying the role of alcoholic actress Myrtle in Opening Night, which faced challenges leading to its early cancellation.

The producers of Opening Night announced that the musical would end its run at the Gielgud Theatre on May 18, thanking the cast and crew for their efforts in bringing the production to life. Despite facing financial risks, Wessex Grove expressed pride in taking a chance on the show and highlighted the talent of the world-class cast, including Sheridan Smith. The decision to end the run earlier than planned was made in response to the challenging financial landscape, with five more weeks left to catch Smith in her role.

Director Ivo Van Hove praised the cast and crew of Opening Night for their commitment and talent in bringing the play to the stage. He commended Sheridan Smith for her bravery in portraying a complex character in the West End, alongside Rufus Wainwright’s beautiful music. The team aimed to create something unique and true to John Cassavetes’ exploration of the human condition, despite the show closing early. While it is always sad for a production to end before its time, Van Hove expressed confidence that Opening Night will leave a lasting impact on those who witnessed and participated in it.

Sheridan Smith’s playful interaction with her security guard after the cancellation of Opening Night showcased her resilience and positive attitude. Stacey Dooley’s upcoming debut in 2:22 A Ghost Story, alongside Inbetweeners star James Buckley, promises to bring a fresh energy to the West End. Despite the challenges faced by both productions, the dedication and talent of the cast and crew shines through in their commitment to delivering memorable performances. As one show closes, another opens, reflecting the ever-evolving nature of the theater world.
