Shakira Reveals the Unexpected Reason Why She Isn’t Fond of the ‘Barbie’ Movie

In a recent interview with Allure, Colombian pop singer Shakira expressed her disappointment in the 2023 blockbuster “Barbie,” starring Margot Robbie. Shakira, who has two sons with ex-boyfriend Gerard Piqué, felt that the movie was emasculating and did not adequately portray the empowerment of women while still allowing men to maintain their masculinity. She believes in empowering women without taking away from men’s ability to protect and provide, emphasizing the importance of complementing each other’s roles in society.

Shakira’s sons, Milan and Sasha, did not enjoy the “Barbie” movie, and she echoed their sentiments about feeling emasculated by the film. She believes that women should have the tools and trust to do it all without losing their femininity, while men should also have their purpose in society. Shakira emphasized the importance of sharing the load with those who deserve to carry it, highlighting the necessity of acknowledging and respecting each other’s roles in society.

Despite the critical acclaim and box office success of “Barbie,” including over $1 billion in worldwide earnings and eight Academy Award nominations, there were dissenting voices, including director Oliver Stone. Stone criticized actor Ryan Gosling for his involvement in the film, believing that he should focus on more serious projects rather than fantasy movies like “Barbie.” However, Stone later apologized for his comments, admitting that he appreciated the film’s originality and themes after viewing it in its entirety.

Shakira’s comments about “Barbie” shed light on the ongoing discussion about gender roles, empowerment, and representation in Hollywood. While the movie was praised for its performance and achievements, it also faced criticism for its portrayal of masculinity and femininity. Shakira’s perspective on empowering women and respecting men’s roles in society reflects a nuanced understanding of gender dynamics and the importance of finding a balance between empowerment and traditional roles.

The conversation surrounding “Barbie” and similar blockbuster films highlights the complexities of gender representation in the entertainment industry and society as a whole. While some applaud the empowerment of women and the breaking of traditional gender norms, others express concerns about the impact on masculinity and the roles of men in society. It is crucial for filmmakers and storytellers to navigate these issues thoughtfully and sensitively, ensuring that both men and women are portrayed in a respectful and empowering manner.

Shakira’s criticism of “Barbie” opens up a dialogue about gender roles and empowerment in popular culture, encouraging viewers to consider the ways in which movies and media influence our perceptions of gender and identity. By acknowledging the importance of both empowering women and respecting men’s roles in society, Shakira highlights the need for balance and inclusivity in storytelling. As discussions around gender representation continue to evolve, it is essential for filmmakers, actors, and audiences to engage in conversations that promote understanding, empathy, and empowerment for all individuals, regardless of gender.
