Seven key narratives that shaped the Americas post-2024: looking beyond Trump’s potential return

The presidential election in the United States between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump on November 5 captured global attention. Trump’s victory led to speculation about his second term starting in January 2024. However, the year also saw significant events worldwide, from Israel’s bombing of the Gaza Strip to the war in Sudan and the ousting of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The Americas region experienced political upheaval, crackdowns on dissent, and the impact of a worsening climate crisis.

In Venezuela, protests erupted after President Nicolas Maduro won a disputed third term in July. The opposition accused him of fraud, leading to a crackdown by the government that resulted in multiple deaths and arrests. Maduro blamed the protests on his opponents and foreign powers, while promising to release vote tallies that have yet to materialize. In Haiti, escalating gang violence forced thousands to flee their homes, leading to a political crisis that saw the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry and the appointment of an interim president.

In Brazil, police accused former President Jair Bolsonaro of involvement in a coup attempt to overturn his election defeat in 2022. Bolsonaro denied the allegations and vowed to fight back legally. In Mexico, violence surged in Sinaloa following the arrest of prominent cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada Garcia, leading to challenges for President Claudia Sheinbaum. Energy crises hit Ecuador and Cuba, with both countries facing electricity shortages due to droughts and aging infrastructure.

Canada and India’s strained relations reignited after Canadian officials accused Indian agents of being involved in criminal activities in Canada, including threats to national security. The diplomatic dispute escalated with the expulsion of diplomatic staff from both countries. In Argentina, President Javier Milei’s libertarian economic policies led to a surge in poverty, sparking protests against austerity measures. Despite the backlash, Milei continued to receive support from his followers.
