Seton Hall Looks to Repeat History by Surpassing Expectations Once Again

Seton Hall’s basketball team is facing challenges similar to those they experienced last year. Despite being underestimated by the league coaches, the team overachieved and finished fourth in the Big East, only to be excluded from the NCAA Tournament and win the NIT. This year, preseason expectations are even lower, with Seton Hall being picked tenth out of eleven teams. The hope is to maintain a successful season and secure a spot in March Madness this time around.

The team has undergone significant changes, losing four starters and six of their top eight scorers. Coach Shaheen Holloway has brought in 10 new scholarship players, with only senior guard Dylan Addae-Wusu and sophomore wing Isaiah Coleman remaining as contributing holdovers. Notable additions include former top-100 recruits Scotty Middleton, Garwey Dual, and Zion Harmon. While the team has potential, there are challenges to overcome with so many new faces on the roster.

Despite the turnover, Holloway is optimistic about the team’s potential and believes they have a high ceiling. Having led Saint Peter’s to the Elite Eight in 2022, Holloway is confident in his coaching abilities and ability to turn potential into production on the court. While the team may lack experience and face tough competition in the Big East, they have talented players who under Holloway’s guidance could surprise many this season.

There are key questions facing the team, including who will play point guard, rebounding capabilities, and how long it will take for the new team to acclimate to Holloway’s coaching style. The Providence transfer Garwey Dual is seen as an X-factor for Seton Hall, with high expectations for his performance under Holloway’s tutelage. Key games on the schedule include matchups against VCU, Rutgers, and St. John’s, which are expected to be challenging but crucial for the team’s success.

An anonymous coach’s assessment of the team suggests that there is work to be done, and the team may not be as tough as they were in the previous season. However, there is optimism about the potential impact of players like Dual and Harmon, who bring experience and talent to the team. The prediction for Seton Hall’s season includes an eighth-place finish in the Big East and a run to the NIT Quarterfinals.

Overall, despite low expectations, Seton Hall has the potential to surprise many this season under the leadership of Coach Holloway. With a mix of new talent and returning players, the team will need time to adjust and develop chemistry on the court. While success may not come easily, the team’s perseverance and determination could lead to a successful season and a competitive showing in the Big East conference.
