Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs to stand trial for sex trafficking charges in May 2025

The federal trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs is set to begin on May 5, with prosecutors planning to take three weeks to present their case against the hip-hop mogul, who has pleaded not guilty to charges of sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation to engage in prostitution. Combs, who has remained in jail since his arrest in September, appeared anxious in court as his supporters, including his mother and children, looked on. If convicted, Combs could face life in prison in what is the most serious legal challenge he has faced, amid a series of lawsuits accusing him of sexual assault and misconduct over the years.

Combs has vehemently denied the allegations against him, with his lawyer stating that he categorically denies any claims of sexual abuse, including those involving minors. Many of the lawsuits filed against Combs have been allowed under the Victims of Gender-Motivated Violence Protection Act in New York City, which allows for sexual abuse complaints to be filed even after the statute of limitations has passed. Combs settled one such complaint last year, where his former girlfriend accused him of rape and abuse. His defense team continues to assert his right to a speedy trial and intends to request a trial date in April or May.

Prosecutors have indicated that there is a significant amount of evidence in the case, including several terabytes of electronic material, which they have begun to turn over to the defense. Items submitted so far include search warrants, a phone seized from Combs, and reports on his iCloud accounts. Prosecutors aim to complete discovery for the trial by the end of the year, with 96 devices seized from Combs’ homes and on his person in Miami. Data extraction may take longer due to some devices being damaged.

During a recent hearing, Combs’ lawyer requested a gag order in the case, accusing federal agents of leaking grand jury information and making prejudicial comments to the media. The defense argued that prosecutors were trying to exclude a damning piece of evidence disguised as press statements. The judge deferred ruling on the issue, allowing time for further discussion. At the end of the hearing, Combs waved to his family, threw them a kiss, and made a prayer motion before being led out of the courtroom.

As the trial date approaches, both the prosecution and defense are preparing for what could be a lengthy legal battle. Combs, best known as a Grammy-winning artist and founder of Bad Boy Records, remains resolute in his denial of the criminal allegations against him. Despite facing the possibility of life in prison, he continues to maintain his innocence and fight the charges with the support of his legal team. With the trial set to commence in May, the case against Sean “Diddy” Combs will be closely watched by the public and the music industry.
