Sea lion population at popular California pier reaches highest level in 15 years

San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf district is currently experiencing a surge in sea lions, with over 1,000 being counted this week. The sea lions first appeared at Pier 39 after a 1989 earthquake and have since become a popular tourist attraction. Harbormaster Sheila Chandor attributes the increase in sea lions to the abundance of food, suggesting that they are preparing for mating season. The sea lions are seen lounging, biting each other, and creating a ruckus in numbers not seen in over a decade, making it a unique sight for visitors.

The number of sea lions at Pier 39 fluctuates depending on the season, with more than a hundred being typically seen on most days. However, this week, there has been a significant increase in the number of sea lions, with over 1,000 being counted. This surge is believed to be due to a school of anchovies, which are a favored food of the sea lions. The anchovies have attracted the sea lions to the area, providing them with a plentiful food source. Despite being a temporary occurrence, the surge of sea lions has pushed the limits of the barges they lounge on, as officials work to accommodate the unexpected influx.

Biologists have noted that the number of anchovies in the bay that has attracted the extra sea lions this spring is unusually high. The schooling fish are said to be located off the Farallon Islands, drawing the sea lions to the area. Businesses in the Fisherman’s Wharf district are hopeful that the surge in sea lions will also lead to an increase in tourists visiting the area. Visitors have flocked to the pier to catch a glimpse of the noisy and lively herd of sea lions, with many expressing amazement at the sight. The surge of sea lions has drawn attention and excitement from locals and tourists alike.

In previous years, large numbers of sea lions have been known to congregate at the pier, with up to 1,700 arriving at once. Typically, there are around 300 to 400 sea lions in the winter and up to 700 in the spring. The current surge of over 1,000 sea lions is a rare occurrence, creating a spectacle for onlookers. Visitors have expressed their delight in witnessing such a large gathering of sea lions and have enjoyed watching their interactions and behaviors. As the sea lions fuel up on anchovies in preparation for mating season, they continue to provide entertainment and interest for those who visit Fisherman’s Wharf.
