Saskatoon soccer players savoring the game with a leisurely pace

Walking soccer in Saskatoon is providing an opportunity for people to enjoy the sport at a slower pace. Organizer and player David Taylor highlighted that it is particularly beneficial for retired individuals and those who are recovering from injuries and want to ease back into physical activity gradually. Despite the slower pace, walking soccer is not necessarily easier than traditional soccer. Players are required to walk instead of run and keep at least one foot on the ground, which can be challenging for some participants.

Jodi Blackwell, CEO of Saskatoon Soccer Centre Inc., mentioned that staff members are encouraged to try out walking soccer. She initially believed it would be a relaxed activity to run around and kick a ball, given her experience playing on a women’s soccer team. However, Blackwell found that walking soccer is actually a great workout that requires a high level of coordination and precision. The sport is offered as a drop-in program at the Saskatoon Soccer Centre on Wednesdays and Fridays, providing a regular opportunity for individuals to participate and stay active.

The slower pace of walking soccer allows participants to engage in the sport without the intense physical demands of traditional soccer. This makes it a suitable option for individuals who may have physical limitations or are looking for a less strenuous form of exercise. By walking instead of running, players can still enjoy the game while reducing the risk of injuries or strain on their bodies. Additionally, the requirement to keep at least one foot on the ground adds a unique challenge that can improve coordination and balance.

Walking soccer has gained popularity in Saskatoon as a recreational activity that caters to a wide range of individuals. Whether retired, recovering from injuries, or simply looking for a new way to stay active, participants have found the sport to be engaging and enjoyable. The relaxed and social atmosphere of walking soccer makes it a welcoming environment for people of all ages and fitness levels. By offering the sport as a drop-in program, the Saskatoon Soccer Centre is fostering an inclusive community where individuals can come together to play and have fun.

The benefits of walking soccer extend beyond physical exercise, providing mental and social advantages as well. Engaging in a team sport like walking soccer can boost mood, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being. The camaraderie and sense of community that come from playing with others contribute to a positive and supportive environment. Participants have the opportunity to form connections, build friendships, and enjoy the benefits of teamwork while engaging in a fun and recreational activity.

Overall, walking soccer in Saskatoon offers a unique and accessible way for people to participate in the sport and stay active. By providing a slower and less intense version of soccer, individuals of all ages and abilities can enjoy the game in a welcoming and inclusive environment. With its emphasis on coordination, balance, and teamwork, walking soccer promotes physical, mental, and social well-being, making it a valuable addition to the recreational offerings at the Saskatoon Soccer Centre.
