Salvador Illa after winning the elections: “The Catalans have decided to open a new chapter and have the PSC lead it”

The PSC in Catalonia has had a perfect night, winning 42 seats with 98% of the votes counted, 9 more than in the previous election. With Salvador Illa as their candidate, they have achieved the third best result in their history, leaving the independence movement far from a majority and closing the chapter on the process. Illa has announced his candidacy for the presidency and will need the support of ERC to form a government. The party celebrated their victory with enthusiasm, emphasizing the need for a new era led by the PSC.

The party’s success is a result of their focus on amnesty and dialogue, rather than the forgiveness of the leaders of the independence movement. Despite lower than expected turnout, Illa remains optimistic about the future and the need for change in Catalonia. The PSC’s ability to form alliances with other parties, including ERC and the common parties, reinforces their position as the leading political force in the region, having won multiple elections in recent years.

On election night, Illa and his team followed the results at the PSC headquarters in Barcelona, with over 150 journalists present, a record for the party. The leadership, including campaign manager Lluisa Moret and spokesperson Núria Parlón, monitored the results closely. The presence of Manuel Castells, a former minister of universities from a different party, highlights the party’s broad appeal and willingness to work across political lines. The party had set a goal of winning over 40 seats, which they successfully achieved.

The results of the election reflect a desire for change and a new era of inclusion in Catalonia. Illa’s message of unity and focus on public services has resonated with voters, leading to their strong performance. The party’s ability to navigate the complex political landscape in Catalonia, including forming alliances with other parties, demonstrates their strategic acumen and ability to lead the region effectively. The PSC’s success in multiple recent elections, including municipal and national, confirms their position as a major political force in the region.

The victory for the PSC marks a significant moment in Catalan politics, with the party poised to lead the region into a new chapter. Illa’s leadership and vision for a more inclusive and progressive Catalonia have garnered widespread support, despite challenges from other parties. The outcome of the election reflects the desire for change and a fresh start in Catalonia, with the PSC at the forefront of this new era. With the support of other parties, the PSC is well-positioned to govern effectively and address the needs of the region in the coming years.
