The third season of Welcome to Wrexham began with a recap of the second season finale, where Wrexham AFC was promoted to the English Football League after 15 years. Cochairmen Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were preparing for the team’s first season in League Two when star player Paul Mullen suffered a harrowing injury during a pre-season game in the United States. Despite his injury, Rob and Ryan joked about offering him a place to stay and even their lungs to help him recover.

Mullen’s injury occurred during a pre-season game against Manchester United in San Diego, where he suffered four fractured ribs and a punctured lung. He was unable to fly back to the U.K. for two weeks, missing the team’s season opener and a reunion with his family. Instead, he had to watch the team’s first League Two game against MK Dons, which they lost 3-5. Notably, Hugh Jackman joined Ryan and Rob at the game, adding some star power to the event.

The loss against MK Dons was the team’s first home defeat in over two years, leading to disappointment among the players and coaching staff. As the episode concluded, Ryan mentioned that they had “hard-launched failure.” New episodes of Welcome to Wrexham can be watched on FX every Thursday. Despite the setback in their first game, the team remained determined to move forward and compete in League Two to the best of their abilities.

The episode showcased the challenges and setbacks faced by Wrexham AFC as they began their journey in League Two, including a major injury to one of their key players. The cochairmen, players, and coaching staff all had to navigate these obstacles and adapt quickly to ensure the team’s continued success. The support of the cochairmen, as demonstrated through their jokes and gestures of kindness towards injured players, was evident throughout the episode.

The tense and emotional moments on the field during Mullen’s injury highlighted the risks and physical toll that professional athletes face in their careers. Mullen’s dedication to his team and his determination to recover from his injury were evident as he watched his teammates play from the sidelines. The loss against MK Dons served as a wake-up call for the team, reminding them of the challenges and competition they would face in League Two.
