Russia’s Objective: Capturing Kyiv Within Weeks

The Russian forces are aiming to capture the eastern settlement of Chasiv Yar within the next few weeks, as stated by Ukraine’s commander-in-chief Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi. This strategic move is part of Russia’s efforts to advance towards Ukraine’s belt of operationally significant fortress cities. By capturing Chasiv Yar, Russia could potentially cut off the settlement of Kostiantynivka and compromise Ukraine’s defense in the Donetsk region. The U.S. think tank, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), assessed that seizing Chasiv Yar would give Russia a strategic advantage in the region.

Anxieties in Kyiv are increasing over the future of U.S. military aid, which is crucial for supporting Ukraine’s war effort. A $60 billion aid package has been stalled in Congress due to political infighting, just as Russia is expected to launch a new offensive. Ukrainian officials and Western analysts have highlighted the lack of essential resources like ammunition, which have hindered Ukraine’s ability to defend against Russian operations. Despite these challenges, Ukraine has strengthened its defenses, including electronic warfare systems and ammunition supplies, along the eastern front.

The eastern Donetsk region of Ukraine has been a focal point of clashes during more than 25 months of full-scale war. Recent victories by Russian forces in capturing Bakhmut and Avdiivka have highlighted the intensification of fighting along the front lines. Colonel General Syrskyi noted that the recent attacks by Russia have significantly worsened the situation in Donetsk, particularly around the towns of Lyman, Chasiv Yar, and Pokrovsk. The ISW observed that Russian forces are leveraging Ukrainian shortages of artillery shells and air defense means to advance their offensive operations, taking advantage of weather conditions and terrain accessibility.

The ISW highlighted that Russian efforts around Lyman, Chasiv Yar, and Pokrovsk are strategic priorities that have seen increased attacks in recent weeks. Ukrainian forces are facing challenges due to shortages of critical defense resources, including artillery shells and air defense means. Russian forces are using tanks and infantry fighting vehicles to break through Ukrainian defenses, with an emphasis on areas where Ukrainian capabilities are weakest. The warmer, dry weather conditions have also facilitated Russian operations by making open terrain more accessible to tanks.

The ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine underscores the importance of international support for Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression. The delay in U.S. military aid has exacerbated challenges for Ukrainian forces, who are facing intensified attacks and strategic advancements by Russian forces. The upcoming capture of Chasiv Yar by Russian forces could have significant implications for the balance of power in the region, potentially compromising Ukraine’s defense capabilities in the Donetsk region. As the situation continues to escalate, the need for coordinated international efforts to support Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity becomes increasingly urgent.
