A group of Russian Orthodox priests took to the skies to pray for an end to unprecedented flooding in various regions of Russia and northern Kazakhstan. Rising rivers in the southern Urals and western Siberia have caused widespread inundation of towns and cities, leading to thousands of evacuations. In the Kurgan region, priests boarded a small Soviet-era AN-2 plane carrying an icon of the “Mother of God Chimeyevskaya” for an airborne procession. They recited prayers as they flew over the flooded Tobol River, which has submerged entire fields in the area. The flight took place before the expected peak flooding in the Kurgan region in the second half of April.

The Kurgan eparchy of the Russian Orthodox Church stated that the clergy joined a monitoring flight with emergency services to pray for assistance in overcoming the natural disaster. During the flight, the priests read a prayer to the Mother of God and held a prayer service in an effort to alleviate the impact of the floods. Metropolitan Daniil, the local Orthodox head, revealed that believers had requested him to organize the flight over the flood zone to offer prayers. He emphasized the traditional significance of icons in helping Russia during times of crisis and suggested that they would also assist in dealing with the severe floods currently affecting the region. Daniil instructed churches along the Tobol River to pray for the water levels to decrease.

The priests’ aerial prayers and procession with the religious icon were part of efforts to seek divine intervention to combat the devastating floods in the region. The symbolic act was based on the belief that religious icons and prayers have the power to protect and guide communities during times of hardship. The priests’ actions were aimed at providing solace to those affected by the floods and offering spiritual support as communities grapple with the destruction caused by the rising rivers. By conducting a prayer service in the air and reciting prayers over the flooded areas, the priests sought to invoke divine assistance in bringing an end to the flooding and alleviating the suffering of the affected populations.

The Russian Orthodox Church’s involvement in the response to the flooding highlighted the importance of faith and spirituality in the face of natural disasters. By mobilizing clergy to conduct prayers and fly over the flood zone, the Church aimed to demonstrate solidarity with the affected communities and provide a sense of hope and comfort during challenging times. The priests’ act of carrying the religious icon on the plane symbolized the Church’s commitment to supporting those affected by the floods and seeking divine intervention to mitigate the impact of the disaster. With the expectation of peak flooding in the region, the Church’s efforts to offer prayers and spiritual guidance were seen as a demonstration of compassion and care for those grappling with the aftermath of the floods.

As the floodwaters continued to rise and threaten more communities in the region, the Russian Orthodox Church’s role in organizing prayers and flying priests over the affected areas underscored the importance of spiritual support in times of crisis. By engaging in acts of prayer and displaying the religious icon during the flight, the clergy sought to provide reassurance and encouragement to those facing the devastating effects of the floods. The Church’s belief in the power of faith and divine intervention to address the natural disaster reflected a deep-rooted tradition of seeking spiritual guidance and support during times of adversity. Through their prayers and ceremonies, the priests aimed to offer a sense of hope and resilience to those affected by the floods, highlighting the vital role of faith in providing comfort and strength in the face of calamity.

In the midst of the ongoing flooding that has overwhelmed various regions in Russia and northern Kazakhstan, the Russian Orthodox Church’s efforts to organize prayers and conduct aerial processions with priests and religious icons demonstrated a commitment to providing spiritual support and guidance to those in need. The clergy’s undertaking of airborne prayers and the recitation of religious texts over the flood-stricken areas signified a belief in the power of faith and divine intervention to help alleviate the suffering caused by the natural disaster. As communities grappled with the devastating impact of the floods, the Church’s involvement in offering prayers and seeking divine assistance served as a source of solace and comfort for those affected. With the floodwaters expected to peak in the coming weeks, the Church’s message of hope and resilience through its spiritual practices emphasized the importance of faith in times of crisis.
