Russia launches ‘outrageous’ and ‘cowardly’ missile attacks on civilian areas in Ukraine for the second day

Ukraine is facing the aftermath of a large-scale missile strike by Russia, which has caused significant damage to critical infrastructure and resulted in casualties. The strike was in response to Ukraine’s incursion into Kursk Oblast, breaching Russia’s border. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is seeking more weapons and financial support from the West to continue the fight, potentially aiming for the removal of restrictions on weapon use to strike deeper into Russia. The conflict escalated on Ukrainian Independence Day when Russia launched 100 missiles and drones in response to Ukraine’s incursion into the Kursk region, marking the first land invasion of Russia since World War II.

Russia’s attacks have been condemned by world leaders, with President Biden promising support for Ukraine’s energy grid and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy criticizing Russia for its actions. Ukraine has been using newly-deployed F16s to defend against further missile and drone attacks, limiting the impact of the strikes. Ukraine is compiling a list of long-range targets to strike in case Western allies lift restrictions on defensive capabilities. The Kursk invasion, which surprised Moscow, aimed to divert attention from other areas and has resulted in the capture of Russian servicemen and settlements.

Despite Ukraine’s efforts, there are concerns about the long-term impact of the conflict on Kyiv, as Russia seeks to degrade Ukraine’s defensive and industrial capacity to deter future strikes and compel the West to stop assisting Ukraine. There are calls for the Biden-Harris Administration to change policy to allow Ukraine to be more aggressive in eroding Russia’s red lines. Peace efforts have been ongoing, with various world leaders attempting to broker a deal between Russia and Ukraine. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have been involved in seeking a path forward for peace, with Modi stressing the need for both sides to come together to find a resolution.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to escalate, with both sides engaging in strategic maneuvers and attacks. Ukraine’s incursion into the Kursk region has led to significant setbacks for Russia and the capture of Russian servicemen and settlements. While world leaders are attempting to broker peace deals, the situation remains tense, with the potential for further escalation. President Zelenskyy is seeking more support from the West to continue the fight against Russia, highlighting the need for a shift in policy to allow for more aggressive actions against Russian forces. The conflict remains a volatile and complex situation, with the potential for significant ramifications for both countries involved.
